These are my first three shots off of a rest at 15 yards. This was also my first time shooting a flintlock

Congratulations on your grades, and your first flintlock rifle. You will ALWAYS remember your first flintlock.

I was about to turn 18, when my Douglas-barreled, .45 caliber, brass-mounted, Lancaster-style longrifle with real nice curly maple, and an engraved patchbox; showed up in the mail from Golden Age Arms Company. I had watched the TV shows, and read the books, and decided to buy a flintlock longrifle. I worked for 9 months, at minimum wage (1971), to pay the $325.00 for it. NO ONE in my family supported my choice. They thought I was crazy to spend so much for an OLD TIMEY gun, when the same amount of money would have purchased a nice, modern, deer rifle with a scope.

Having a father that supports what you want to do, and is willing to build his son such a nice rifle as yours is, makes your rifle even more special than mine was.

And, I thought my rifle was pretty darn special!!!

Good shooting, and keep up your grades.

Be sure to thank your dad A LOT!!!!!

Congratulations Will. The flintlock is nice and you’re a lucky guy to have a father that supports your interests. Don’t let the rifle overshadow your great accomplishment that you proved you can get great grades.  Don’t let up on your school work, doing well in school will open doors for you that you might not have thought possible. Keep it up.

Will, I'm going to wax poetic and be a little preachy here...

Most of us here are a bunch of "old" guys. Now being old doesn't necessarily mean we're smart. But it does mean we've made enough trips around the sun to experience some things that life has to offer. Some of it good. Some of it not so good.

The key to getting anywhere in life is to have goals. If you are serious about achieving those goals, have a plan. Stick to that plan. If you are faced with a decision, ask yourself, "Which choice will help me achieve my goals?" Sometimes you will be faced with a choice that involves sacrifice. That's a part of life. Short term sacrifice can mean achieving your goals in the long run. Good grades and a good education will never hurt you. All knowledge pays off at some point.

So...

Have goals.

Have a plan to achieve those goals.

Stick to the plan.

Make choices that keep you on the path of the plan to achieve your goals.

That's some tired old cliche advice. But it's the plain simple truth. Keep up the hard work.

Old preachy guy is out...

Mike

Wow! I would have been in hog heaven to have a rifle like that!

Congratulations on the grades and the gun! I think you will find the you can easily make the grades now that you have done it once. It’s all a matter of effort-results.

Hey looks good Will, how about a shot of the other side. What are you going to hunt with it? Have you tried shot in it yet? Did you get to do any of the work on it? Good job on the school work, tell your Dad he did a nice job. Have you guys started planning the next one yet ;)

Will, I hope your band-aid supply has not run low.  If you need more, just PM me.
I am going to presume that you have learned to knap flints for your rifle, so I will trade you a new box of band-aids for two "Mr. Will" flints, 3/4"

Will,
Congratulations to you for the grades and achieving the honors you have received for your great efforts. Thankful you realized what you needed to do and went for it. Keep those grades on top and it will pay off for you in college and life!
Also congratulations to your Dad for accomplishing such a nice rifle build for you! That is truly a Special Dad!
Finally it is great to hear about a Dad in this day and times that is not so busy, he can’t do something very special for his son and give such a neat reward for his accomplishments!
God’s Speed to you both!
