This is for the old timers. Today I acquired a Hawken style rifle made in 1967 by Andrew Fautheree. He was a fine builder. It is in as new condition. I’m not sure it’s ever been fired. The good news when I got it home is the stamp on the barrel. W.M. Large. Darn thing is heavy with a 36” 1” barrel mostly because it’s a .45! Thought I was getting a .50.
Interesting to see Hawken-styled rifles built back then. A couple oddities: it has a set trigger that must be set. The lock is nice but has a coil spring. Stamped on the inside “1967 A.M. OSTERMAN — MAKER”

Good morning Richard, couple years back I had a very fine A Fautheree Hawken with a Large barrel.
I will look at my computer pictures later and post if you would like to see them.
Sold it to a feller in California.

Hi Rich, I am pretty sure the one I had also had Osterman coil spring lock. Mr Fautheree did/does beautiful work. Dave
My friend Bob W has one or two 60's vintage coil spring lock . 8) 8)

I believe Andrew Fautheree passed away in 1994. I think he made a wide range of styles of guns.

Rich, I had communication via email from him about 2012 or there abouts. He was in Colorado then. I also had a Fordny style flint/percussion beautiful rifle, sold it ,too. Have pics Dave 8) 8)

Don’t know if it was the same guy, but I used to shoot BP cartridge rifle silhouette with an Andy Fautheree at Effingham, Illinois in 2003-2006 or so. I really miss shooting with those guys.

I used to go to the shoots with Andy quite a bit when I lived in Colorado. I've lost touch with him, but I believe he is still alive. He is a fine gun builder and a great person.

That is a fine looking Hawken to my eye. I'd stain that ramrod, but that is just me.
Have you shot it? I am curious about the orientation of Bill Large's name on the angled flat. If Bill meant that to be oriented down, which many barrel makers do, it may end up with misoriented run out. Leaves the sights hanging off to the side. I really hope that isn't the case on such a fine looking rifle.

The gun shoots straight. It had never been sighted in. The front sight was tall and untouched. It was shooting mighty low as delivered. All good now.

I was watching that auction; glad somebody on this forum snagged it! I was bird hunting in Montana and the auction house didn't make it easy to bid, so I decided to concentrate on the hunting. You got it for a good price.
I think Fautheree still had classified ads for rifle building in Muzzle Blasts about 15 years ago; not sure what his status is now. I've only handled two or three or his rifles, but I've always thought that he was one of the better builders from the days of the old "Hawken Craze".

Glad you are enjoying this fine Hawken,Rich. The one I had didn't appear to have ever been fired. Those were the days,eh?
I am glad to see renewed interest in Hawkens today. I had 3 on gunsinternational,and all have new homes,and getting enjoyed.

Dave, now I’ve got to build one for myself in the next year. Probably walnut full-stocked J&S is what I’m thinking. Still hunting for a breechplug.

Tell me again what plug you lookin for, and barrel size, Seems you are after a 1 1/8 "comma" plug. Dave 8) 8)

Yep. Either a comma or a “conquistador helmet” style in 1 and 1/8” for a .54. Have to check the threads.

Only thing I have is for 1' barrel, 3/4 16,and conquistador style. I will keep my peepers open.
I am still working on my version of what you want to do. Mostly fit up, some shaping. Was fortunate to get a comma plug with some parts. This rifle is stocked in cherry. Have a goodun, Dave 8) 8)
