Title: First elk with a flintlock
Post by: Tilefish on October 21, 2019, 02:11:32 AM
First off I would like to say thanks to the members of this forum especially the hero members. If it wasn't for the wealth of information you all share about rifles, calibers, and load data. I would not have been able to take this beautiful cow elk.I was able to get in range of a bull but just didn't feel comfortable about the shot. But was more than happy with a cow.I have to say hunting with a flintlock is by far the most rewarding hunting I have ever done. Thanks again everyone.

Congratulations tilefish. Where was the harvest? Give us some details on the harvest. What caliber and load? How far was the shot? I like the details. Thanks

Any elk taken with a flintlock is a trophy elk. Congratulations and job well done.

Rifle is a Tip Curtis Allentown pattern in 54 cal. The load was 110gr of goex ffg with a .530 hornady round ball .20 denim patch and mink oil. Shot was freehand 72yds. Still can't believe I hit her was shaking so bad. Ball entered right behind the shoulder no exit hole. Was hunting public land in Idaho.

Congrats on a fine kill.

It must be the week end for Tip Curtis .54 cal rifles ...

What a great accomplishment. You deserve to be very proud.
I, too, learn so much from the masters here.

Congratulations!! I have killed 4 elk cows with a caplock Hawken but the most rewarding one was the cow I shot last December with a Bucks County Flintlock.

Congrats, Tile fish!  You can't eat the horns, and I have always found doe meat to be just as tasty, and a bit more tender.

Elk are hunted and taken every year with a variety a methods, and have got to believe that very few are taken with a flintlock.  Congratulations on becoming a member of a rather exclusive club.

Congrats!!!

Like was said, I'm certain very few elk are taken every year by flintlocks.  Definitely something to be proud of!!

Congratulations, tilefish, on a nice elk.  There's nothing to compare with taking a big game animal with a flintlock.  You'll always remember your first but each and every one will be a total thrill.  Good shooting and that rifle is really nice.

Outstanding!!!   Any elk taken on public lands is a trophy IMO.  Using a flinter is icing on the cake.

Congrads for a nice dinner dish and a great way to harvest. 50 miles from McCall. I live 24 miles from McCall in Council.
