Title: First squirrel with a flintlock
Post by: scottmc on November 07, 2019, 03:35:51 PM
Stalked the woods in Lancaster County, PA yesterday hoping to find and kill two squirrels for squirrel corn chowder.  I carried this rifle last year in the late season but never saw a squirrel.  Today was different as I shot at three and got two.  The weather was great and I couldn't have asked for a better day.
Stats of the rig are as follows:
.40 hoyt barrel
Walnut from a tree that stood about 40 yards from this spring house
Myron Carlson trigger guard, buttplate and set triggers
Left hand L&R Bailes lock
Rifle built by Paul Allison of Gap, Pa
Bag by Ken Scott
Appalachian Horn by Jeff Bibb

Yes, first and second.  Hopefully, a few more to come.  I love hunting those little tree rats!

Flintlock rifle with dead squirrel pictures are my favorite.  I've told the wife if I ever hit one of the little buggers and get a picture, we are wallpapering the entire downstairs with it.  She said "NO"!

Too cool! I bet it was a great day in the woods. Some real nice looking equipment there.

We had a squirrel target at our shoots that was called the "nightmare" target.  It showed about six different squirrels; head shots, cutting a nut, hanging upside down, etc.  It was quite fun to shoot and excellent practice for taking tree rats with a muzzleloader.

Talk about fun and loads of satisfaction, nothing's like it when a flintlock's envolved.

Congratulations! There's nothing like the sound of that first "kerplunk" when they hit the ground.
I'm not able to roam the woods any more but can remember that sound!

As I lingered at the coffee shop yesterday a friend came in and as we were discussing things, he mentioned that he was cutting wood and was seeing lots of squirrels. He wanted to know if I would like a few and I said bring them on. Young ones I fry, older ones get made into squirrel dumplings.  ;)

Big John, sorry to hear u can't get out anymore but I always tell folks that squirrel is about as good a eatin as you're ever gonna get.  I told my wife that when the world ends, they'll always be squirrel so we'll be fine😁

I ate a LOT of squirrels, growing up in South Western Ontario, mostly fried, some stews.
Some were a bit tough - oh well, young teeth didn't mind, much.
Mostly greys, but blacks and some fox squirrels as well as grouse, pheasant & cotton tails.

Rich, nope!  All down the pipe, filtered, spread on some Lancaster county field and in an ear of corn that some amish cow ate and provided milk to Turkey Hill dairy.🤣

Congratulations on a good hunt. There's noting like squirrel hunting for me.  I went yesterday and didn't see a thing until I saw 3 in one oak tree feeding on the new growth.  It's getting green here.  I will go to the river today and finish out the squirrel season.  I hope to see you all at the Knoxville Show.  James Levy

Squirrel hunting is probably my favorite. Congratulations, I guess they were left handed squirrels. The right handed one got away.
