This was a fun build with no carving or engraving other than my name on the barrel. Not even a patch grease hole! It is built around a Rice .40 cal x 42" A wt. barrel and Chambers Classic Ketland flintlock and dbl. set triggers from TOTW. A 13 7/8" pull and 4 3/4" drop and weighs in at 7.6 lbs. I went to it's new squirrel huntin' owner yesterday. It is his first flintlock and first custom built rifle. I put 14 rounds through it last week and it performed flawlessly and quick every time, so I think will have a good time shooting flint with our club and in the woods.
This piece of wood rippled up real nice from all the scraping to shape and finish it. A long bleach bath/bluing etched the metal parts boldly!
I didn't want it to look like a cookie cutter Tennessee rifle kit and I think I succeeded in that effort to be a little different.

Glad you got the photos done before the weather. Lovely rifle. The metal isn’t as pitted as I guessed from your description. Do I see a faux “twist” look to the barrel? Subtle. That trigger guard is unique and more gracefully shaped than many of the Appalacian ilk. God bless, Marc

Great rifle Tom. I'm en trawled with the treatment of the comb wrist transition. I've never seen one like that before. It makes such good sense, and I like it.

I saw that "diamond" shaped wrist on one of the Soddy Daisy rifles in the archive, but I don't recall his name. It was challenging.

Beautiful rifle and I like it. I particularly like the "wrist treatment". My eyes were automatically drawn to the metal finish which I think of as perfect for a SMR. I do like that "look".

I really like the way the trigger guard has that little "flip" on the very end of the grip. Wondering if it had a special use, or is just ornamentation? Either way, I would like to use one some day.

I was wondering about that too. Tom, how did you achieve that barred turkey feather look on that barrel? Looks really cool. Heck, so does the whole rifle.

The trigger guard is a casting #TG-TN-2-I from TOTW.
The barrel treatment? I painted stripes around the 5 exposed flats using Super Blue and cu-tips. Did the same thing on all the metal parts. Then bathed them in 2:1 mix of bleach & water for about an hour. The blued area gets etched (deep rust) and the un-blued part doesn't hardly at all. Rubbed it all back with a wire brush and applied diluted blueing with a steel wool pad. Then wipe it down with your favorite oil several times.
You can draw any pattern you want with the blue. Example, wavey lines, spots, blotches, or solid blue all over. Could have done tighter stripes with a small paint brush.
Caution: on the lock plate and frizzen make sure to grease the machined surface and inside of drilled holes and frizz face.
Grease the barrel bore well and plug the muzzle and touch hole.
Smaller parts shouldn't take more than 30 minutes.
