Title: Not quite ready for prime time
Post by: Stoner creek on February 14, 2020, 09:57:26 PM: We’ve got really good gunmakers out there and here I am trying to be one. Ain’t happening boys! Anyway, this is something that I just finished up. I was warned about carving quilted stump sugar maple but I was too stubborn to listen. This has a B profile 50 cal Hoyt barrel, Chambers Dale Johnson lock, and a Frank House forged wrought iron guard. My preferences keep returning to that Reading School stuff whether it be in the carving or the architecture. This gun has some Reading carving influences and a big dose of Stoner Creek architecture (for what that’s worth). It was fun to make but the next carved gun will be on an easier to carve and finish piece of wood. I’ll bet it’s a shooter.

Post by: Mike Lyons on February 14, 2020, 10:35:41 PM: Nothing to run down on that one. I think it turned out perfect and it's a real comfortable rifle and shoulders as good as any I've held. I really like the Dale Johnson lock too. Hope you're staying above water in your neck of the woods.

Could only get a 48" barrel at the time. The original is 51 ½" long.

1 coat of Trans-Tint Honey Amber mixed 4-1 with water, 1 coat Kiblers Iron Nitrate, 1 coat LMF Lancaster Maple. Easy-cheesy.
