Title: Doodles
Post by: Scota4570 on March 26, 2020, 02:48:21 AM
I got a little time to play with the engraving design for a Vincent patchbox.  Top is original.  Bottom is my version.  I am not trying to copy the original.  It will need to fit on a patchbox lid of 1 1/4" x 2 5/8".  I do not want to much detail.  Shading is not shown on purpose.  Opinions of my drawing?  Improvements?

Nice! Are you using a hammer and graver?

I would say go for it. Think about any shading when you get the basic pattern done.

Since you asked, I love the design, but my eye says to elongate the left part [ looks a tad squarish ] so that it's curves are more in line with the right hand part of the drawing [ which is perfect !!  ]
Wouldn't take much .

Good eye.

When I make time to play, I use a Lindsay pneumatic.  And then only short sessions.  My hands are pretty used up, I could not use a hammer and chisel anymore.

Thanks for the votes of confidence.  Please use it.  I would like to see how it works for others.

I thought the first one was nice, but Bob was right- it looks even better elongated.
Very nice drawing.

Scota I like the second design better also. I have one other suggestion and that would be to take the two designs that are in between where your scrolls split and make the double lobes into a triple leaf or shorten the dividing line between the two lobes and add a triple sprig design coming out of the new 3 lobes. See picture.
Not drawn to well but maybe it will give you a better understanding of what I am trying to say. Most engraving books that I have read suggest that flowers and leaf type designs should have odd numbers of pedals, 3, 5, or 7.
