Title: smoothbore pistol project (updated 3/31/2020)
Post by: David Rase on March 30, 2020, 02:46:07 AM
Working on a little pistol that I saw on on John Bryan's Scavengeology page.  The original pistol is all iron mounted and is of small caliber.  John thinks it to be a southern squirrel pistol.  I don't know, I just though the pistol was really cool.  I took a bit of artistic liberty and added some brass components to this pistol to make it my own.  The lock plate, under rib, side plate and trigger plate are brass.  The lock started out life as a small Siler percussion.  The hollow under rib was made from a piece of brass bar stock.  I will keep in the style of the original and the trigger guard will be of strap steel.  The pistol started talking to me the other night in the shop and I am seeing some wriggle engraving the length of the under rib as well as a couple of wriggle bands at the muzzle surrounding the front sight.  What else is is in store for this pistol, I won't know until it speaks to me again.  I am possibly seeing some paint and a built up and wore back finish.

That is neat looking, I like the stock design, are you going to leave the grip flat like that. What cal. is it? Tapered barrel?

Tim,
The barrel is double tapered, i.e. the first 5" from the breech tapers faster than the remainder of the barrel going forward to the muzzle.  This allows for the lock panels to have just a slight flair at the tails after filing flats on the barrel to accommodate the lock bolster.  The caliber is .50 smooth.  The grip will remain flat, though I will be removing a bit more material and narrowing it up as I get into final shaping.  There will be some coarse checkering added to the flat part of the grip using a file.  Hoping to get the trigger plate and trigger guard made today.  Sights will be next.

David, I really like that.  It has a clean, sleek look to it, very functional design.  A simple design for the checkering will be neat, especially if done with a small file.

David:  that's a clever way to ensure that the drum doesn't rotate out of alignment  with the hammer...the square drum rather than cylindrical.

I was able to make and inlet both the trigger plate and trigger guard today.  I also spent some time working with the lock and trigger.  Tomorrow will be sight making and installation day.

is the tang bolt going up through the trigger plate?

Justin,
The only bolt in this pistol is the lock bolt.  The tang, trigger plate and trigger guard are all held in place with wood screws.

David, is that one of the barrels from your "3- 13.5" barrels from a 36" smoothbore"?

Craig,
Yes, those are the barrels I made from the .50 smooth bore.  Don't ask how I got 3 - 13.5" barrels out of a 36" blank.  My math error was already pointed out to me.  As I stated, I am much better with a micrometer than a ruler.  ;D  Go figure.

Hey, with all this COVID stuff going around, we NEED a good chuckle now and then.  But I do want to borrow your ruler sometime - I think it's magic...  And I keep giving thought to your extra barrels, and shaking my head as I look at my bank account.

Made the front and rear sights and installed them today. I also made and inlet the lock bolt escutcheon. I should be able to get into some serious wood removal and stock shaping tomorrow.
