Title: Telework/stay at home therapy
Post by: pjmcdonald on April 02, 2020, 10:12:00 PM
While possibly not applicable to the pros and full time builders, like Jim (he’s a part time hermit anyway) thought I’d start a thread on what gun work people are doing during this period of public distancing (I like that term better than “social distancing” - we’re mostly social here.)

So here’s what I’m doing. Fourth coat of linseed oil/shellac mix rubbed on, drying in the sun. More metal to polish later.

Telework is bad - I can keep ALR up all day in the background!

Stay safe, wash your hands, and don’t touch your face!

Good idea, Paul.  I’m trying to finish a fowling piece in time for Kentucky turkey season (hunting and fishing is still open in Kentucky, unlike some other locations). It’s a 16 gauge Ed Rayl barrel and a round faced Chambers lock in a piece of walnut I got from Dunlaps last year. I forged a simple butt piece and trigger guard, and made all the rest of the parts. I’m hoping it comes off as a simple frontier restock, with some southern influence.

Nice guys. That one should have a pretty stock, Greg.
The one that appears black, is sure dark.

Daryl, poor photo I suppose. But it is black walnut. I did use aqua fortis. Tried a piece without stain, just BLO/shellac mix. Didn’t like the color. .54 cal Rice barrel and Davis lock still to get final finish before final assembly.

I’ll try to get a better photo tomorrow.

Greg, beautiful piece of wood and nice lines! One of these days, I’ll have to build a Fowler. Never been a bird hunter but with a gun like that, I’d have to have a go.

Regards,

Paul

I understand, Paul. I did the same to the black walnut stock on my pistol & it turned out quite black.
I sanded that off considerably, then finished it. It still is darker than with only oil, but is quite pleasing now, I think.

Greg, I'm curious as to the length of the barrel but really liking the looks of it.  Please be sure to post more pics as you move the project along.

Mick, this barrel is 36” long, and 1 1/4” breech. It feels real good, and should make a dandy turkey gun.  I’m finishing the wood and metal right now. Finished weight came in at 7 pounds, 10 ounces.

Here’s my turkey gun, metal browned and wood finished in tung oil. I have until our opener on April 18th to get a load worked up.

And just in time for Kentucky Turkey Season! That gun looks fast in all the right places. Excellent.

Paul, it seems like in my shop, the last 10% takes 90% of the time...if that makes any sense?  Final fitting, sanding/staining/wood finish, metal polish/ finish...the kind of work that can’t be rushed. When I used to stock rifles on commission, I know my clients got tired of hearing “it’ll be done when it’s finished”...yours will be done when it’s finished!

Greg, I know exactly what you mean. Every project I’ve ever been involved with seems like the last 10% takes 90% of the effort.

In any case, I think I’ve done all the damage I can do to this piece of wood and pile of parts. Still shows almost black in photos. It isn’t but it is very dark. At least that highlights the brass!

I'm getting a bit of work done, albeit a bit sporadic.

Finally getting some final work done on my Christian's Spring rifle:

Carving behind the cheekpiece (not quite finished, or cleaned up):

(https://i.ibb.co/Lgmp3h0/IMG-0939.jpg) (https://ibb.co/4SzNHgF)

Lock panel moulding:

(https://i.ibb.co/TPQNCKV/IMG-0940.jpg) (https://ibb.co/zP3tk8y)

And finally decided (late in the game) to add the patch box that is on the original:

Got the hinge worked out today:
(https://i.ibb.co/WPDLBTn/IMG-0942.jpg) (https://ibb.co/GtsqCh7)

Then flattened the area for the box and started to drill out the cavity:
(https://i.ibb.co/HBhY4pX/IMG-0941.jpg) (https://ibb.co/KbK7hzm)

Lots of time at home, but also lots of work to do around the house etc, so progress is slow and sporadic.

Cheers,
Norm

Greg, thanks! It shoulders well. Will have to wait for range to open again before I can sight in.

Norm, carving looks great! Going to be an elegant piece.

Been working on a gun I volunteered to make for our 2 day Labor Day shoot ( shameless plug ...Fort Tassinong Muzzleloaders in NW Indiana).    Blank I picked up for this looked like it had seen a chainsaw, so work with a couple of planes was called for.
