Title: Building a Brass barrel flintlock pistol
Post by: runastav on April 30, 2020, 06:38:14 PM
Hi Guys! Planning build a sort of duell pistol With this original belgian made brass barrel and a original flintlock think made by a belgian gunsmith. The barrel is 8-1/2"  and swamped.

Here is proably the reason why the barrel is unused, a total missdrilled flash hole!

I saw Barrels like this on Ebay some years ago. If I were you I would check up on the proof marks to see if they were proofed. Those barrels are most likely made of bronze rather than Brass which is good because Bronze is much stronger than brass and I don't think it age hardens. at least as much. I would proof them at about 75 grns. of fffg and a patched rb, Or 50 grns of fffg and 2 prbs. twice.
 Almost 57 cal.

I have the same "new" old stock barrel that I got from Track of the Wolf many years ago. Has the same very low touch hole. I figured I'd have to plug the existing hole and redrill. Will be interested to see what you do with it.

I suspect the low touch hole was so the main spring of a large martial lock would clear the bottom of the barrel.

Hi,
The vent hole was drilled low so the mainspring could clear the rapid taper of the barrel at the breech.  Also keep in mind, our notion of locating the touch hole at the "sunrise" position relative to the top of the pan was not applied to many if not most martial guns and many civilian guns.  The hole was often buried a little into the pan.  I believe, that combined with a fairly large touch hole resulted in more reliable ignition rather than fast ignition because the greater radiant heat after priming burns a little was more likely to ignite the charge after the barrel was fouled from previous shots.  Runar, your project is going to be really neat but that kind of barrel was not used on dueling pistols.  They were used on civilian "over coat" pistols, naval pistols, and sometimes military horse pistols.

In my opinion our modern day idea of touch hole location is just that. Modern.

Interesting, but I don't think the chamfer was necessary. Perhaps thinning that spot was not a good idea, strength-wise. It might
make no difference, though.

Hello Runastav, I have been following this build closely. I like the way that you have all your guide lnes boldly marked. That always helps to avoid mistakes. I noticed that you did not diminish the wood on the lock side closer to the final surface. That really makes it harder to inlet the lock.  I'm sure you figured that out.
What I like the most is that cool lock. Also you have not whined once about how hard it is to hold a pistol.
Can't wait to see it finished.

I like the way you made your trigger in two parts. I typically make them in one piece and there is a lot of trial an error fitting to get the end result I want. Next one I make will be two pieces.

for your flash hole, you can drill to the end then tap M6 or 1/4 "or something like that to put a touch hole that you will have made on lathe if you don't find it. The advantage is a direct start.

I think the kolrose will look very nice on that wood.  Tried some with coffee grounds a while back, really needed something darker in color.

Hello Runar,
the barrel is derived from a Belgian pistol that was officially released in 1976 on the 200th anniversary of the American Independance by Centaure (FAUL). The pistol is a replica of Gen. Washington pistols. Two of these are exhibited in the Westpoint-Museum and two of the belgium replicas are exhibited in Mount Vernon. As the originals the replica postol had massive silver bearings and is very rare today.
Your gun is great. Congratulations!
