Title: May ALR social distancing beef shoot
Post by: Justin Urbantas on April 30, 2020, 07:04:45 PM
Looks like I won last month's shoot, so it's my turn to pick and judge this month's shoot.
This month's shoot is inspired by the beef shoot in Fess Parker's Davy Crockett (one of my favourites)

For this month you'll need a piece of 8 1/2" ×11" paper, ruler, scissors, pen, a soup can, and a target backer of your choice.
Make an X corner to corner on your paper and cut out one of the narrow triangles.
Tape/staple this to a target backer of your choice. Do your best to center a soup can on the X, and trace around it.  The goal is to put your shots in the notch without cutting the white paper.
The target is scored as marked, and the match will be 5 offhand shots at 25 yards.
I'll do the half ball rule on it. Wherever 1/2 or more of your ball is, that's how you'll score. Possible max score is 50, and low score is -50.

Match is open till May 31st. Winner of the match will receive a package of beef jerky in the mail.
Have fun with it guys. Please mark your targets with score, date, and load/gun info. One attempt please, and even if you don't score well, please post your target.

Good luck everyone.  Aim small, miss small....

Nice shooting on the last match Justin.  You shoot that little .45 cal rifle very well.

And I like this contest.  You should probably give us a diameter of the circle...there's lots of soup cans of different sizes, from single serving to 1 gallon.  I'm in in any event.

I tried a similar target in our club’s social distancing shoot and did awful. Hopefully I used up all my bad shots.

Thank you Taylor.
I've had that rifle for 15 years now. I have it pretty well figured out. Too bad it isn't one I built.
I used a 284 ml chicken noodle soup can. It's right at 2 5/8" diameter.

I think about a 9 1/2 to 10oz can would be about right - of course 2 5/8" would be close to perfect.

looks good Mike. It's a tricky target. You can decide to hold high, and go for the easy 25 points, or risk it all and go for the 10 pointers.

Just talking to Taylor. We're planning on shooting it this weekend.
Sorry I missed Mike's shoot.  Don't quite have the "Busy" excuse now, do I?
I know, the 'range' was too long.
Just made a target. Didn't have a 2 5/8" can, but did have a 2 1/2" can and the pen line is exactly just a hair under 2 5/8"- good enough.
Guess I'll use the .69.

Taylor and I shot the postal match. Not good, but oh well. LOL
2 10;s, 2 5's and one -5 = score 25. .69 cal. rifle, 82gr. 2F GOEX,
.022" canvas patch and .683" slightly hard (alloy) balls.

As Daryl has so eloquently said, could have been better, but was not.  Here's my submission for May.  I used my Kuntz rifle .40 cal. with 60 gr. 3Fg Graf powder and a saliva lubed .018" denim patch.  I score 3 x 10, 1 x 5, and 1 x -5 = 30/50.  My last shot was my -5, a hangfire.  Lesson, pay closer attention to your flint.

Title: Re: May ALR social distancing beef shoot
Post by: rich pierce on May 03, 2020, 02:02:57 AM
I went to the range today to keep working up my smoothbore and how to aim it and while there tried the postal match target with my 11 pound Hawken-ish .45 rifle. I’m not sure if this is a re-entry match or not. Let’s say I was feeling kinda negative about my first target.  ;D

Second was better, a 20. Going to give it another go with a lighter rifle and keep that 11 pound gun for cross stick and bench work.

Rich:  I don't know if this breaks rules or not either, but I'd like to shoot another target with a different rifle.  My next choice would be a .40 cal Kibler Mountain Rifle.  It has set triggers, which I think would be an advantage.  We'll see.  It is not an easy contest.

Seems like 25-30 is where most folks are scoring. You can shoot it and post it again for fun, but only the first target counts towards the match. Good job guys. I'm going to shoot mine next weekend.

Well boys, I'm in for a minus 10 score. Course, I was shooting a new rifle, the sun got in my eyes, my prime was a little damp, and a gusty breeze was coming in from 9:00 o'clock. LOL

Seriously, shooting it made me want to load up and shoot it again, because I KNOW I can do better than that.  Thanks for a good morning of shooting.

Self built .36 caliber flintlock. 35 grains of 3F Goex with a .020 patch.

This is a fun target. May make time to shoot it again with one of my more familiar rifles today.  The little Cherokee called to me yesterday.  I'd bought it a couple years ago at an auction and hadn't fired it more than 10-15 times.

Thanks for the challenging target, Skychief.

Well, I managed to sneak out for a bit, and shoot my target. Who's idea was this? It's tricky!  I scored 15.
This was  with .440 rb, 50 grains ffg, .018 patch lubed with Lehigh valley lube.
The other target with the two .45 in the 10 ring were my fouling shots.
Rainy and windy here too, but I wanted to get out.

I used a "compass" to make up 3 more targets - the radius is 1.3125". That way, using the intersection of the diagonal lines,
the circle is centered perfectly (Mike)  ;) ;D.
Title: Re: May ALR social distancing beef shoot
Post by: Justin Urbantas on May 04, 2020, 10:22:51 PM
I was looking closer at Mike's target, and the circle is a little higher than it should be, and the circle is oblong. To keep it fair for everyone,  I would have to say that it wouldn't pass the half ball rule if the circle was circular and centered. I would mark it as a 25, not a 30. Sorry Mike.  Still mighty fine shooting.

Justin: I agree whole hardly I dashed together the original target on the way to the range. Never intended to mislead anyone or hurt feelings. I have deleted the original post and replaced it with the circle drawn exactly centered and score corrected. My bad.

Once I knew what the diameter of the circle was supposed to be, it was a simple matter to set up a compass at 1 5/16" radius, and using the intersection of the white and black, strike a circle.  That put the circle exactly where it was supposed to be.

Daryl: nope just an old guy in a hurry who didn't take the time to build a "proper" target. At 30 points I didn't hesitate to post it figuring ther would be several 35's, 40, 45, and maybe a 50. Everyone else obviously found this target just as challenging as I did. That's the reason I reposted the corrected target.

Justin: you must've left Paradise, Mt. and headed back up to B.C. if you're measuring your soup in ml. instead of ounces and a French spelled label. Don't mean to steal your target thread, but we had an outdoor meeting last Tues. night (6' apart ? ) and voted to hold our spring shoot out in Marion again (that'd be the 14th - 17th) and for the "viris" no Saturday night pot-luck. The Tobacco River boys in Eureka had to cancel April, and I guess the Wildhorse shoot W. of Missoula had to cancel on their Forest Service lease for Memorial Day. Will we see ya'?

After supper. Wasn't going to post it. LOL :-\
I make this -20 - do I win?
Just couldn't get it up.
The high shot, that is arguably in or out, was called.
All the rest felt good. Imagine that.
Same load as before, but pure lead balls this time.

You know, you're not supposed to shoot blindfolded, right Daryl?  ;)

Shooting blindfolded wasn't so bad, but he spun me around three times - that made it hard to hold steady.
That's why it's a horizontal group - except for the one I called a bit high, of course. ;) ;) nudge nudge

Still too cold and snowing again here  >:(    Hopefully tomorrow will be more conducive to shooting my target .

Where the heck do you live that it is still snowing in mid-may?

LOL - he's only 100 miles North of Kingston, Ontario.
Balmy sunny 20C here today, same tomorrow & we're about 600 miles North of Bob.
That's 68 ForeignHeat.

I see, or to put it better, don't see Daryl's today target!  Come-on Bro......

Shot the target again today just for fun...neither of us did as well as our first effort.  But here's mine from May 9th...

That is undeniable, legitimate offhand shooting.....

Yeah - he's been doing pretty good since he got his eyes fixed.
LOL- He wasn't too shabby before he got them fixed, but it is harder
to beat him now - AS YOU CAN SEE! ;D
He shoots that 11 pound Virginia C-weight .50 rifle fairly well.

Ah, the old 24' barrel and Cellophane over the target trick....

LOL - just goes to show, a 10 pound rifle with a 42" bl. holds nicely.

That depends on how the 10 pounds is distributed over the length of the rifle  :)

I do like a minimum of 9 lbs and something like a 45” barrel for decent offhand shooting.

too heavy for me. My arms get tired. 7-8 lbs is more my style

It's a Virginia rifle, with a "C" weight .50 cal barrel, the balance is perfect - for him - and not too shabby for me as well.
I prefer a little more muzzle weight.  My 9 1/2 pound English-styled gun is a little light for standing target shooting but it's
a perfect weight for absorbing hunting load recoil.  Never feel it when shooting at a moose.

Okay folks, we've had some good entries and fine targets shot for this month's shoot. You folks have one last weekend to get out there and see what you can do. I hope to see a couple more shooters give it a try.

Spring seeding is late this year, and up to eyes in it.
Hope to shoot this, but possibility of such is fading...

Finally, the weather cooperated. Sun cloud mix with temp at 10 deg C and plenty of black flies and mosquitoes to deflect the balls  :)    Used my flint .40 cal ,  .390 balls with 40 gr 3F     Score of 20 , minus 10 =   10
Very difficult target.  1st shot was the minus 10, then the 3 higher in the 5  . Forced myself to shoot lower, but was just outside the 10 .   This was a lot of fun.

Sorry for the muddy target; there is a story!

Shot today, 5-31-2020 at 5:00 PM EST from the porch of our Line Shack at Windy Hill Farms.

25 Yards Offhand
Edwards/Kibler Colonial .54 Cal.
65 gr. DuPont FFFg
.530 Hornady
.18 OxYoke w/Ballistol (wet).

Target became easier after the 1st shot making a tunnel effect for enhanced light contrast.

I leave it for you eagle eyed guys to score.

Good job to all the shooters this month. We had quite a few entries for this tricky shoot. I would like to congratulate Taylor for winning with a very respectable score of 30.  He has the the honour of selecting the shoot for June. Send me your address Taylor, and I'll mail you some jerky, or bring it for you to Heffley in August.
