Well, win some - lose some. You don't know until you try. I was inspired by the engraving Ken Gahagan did on the Gahagan/Pratt gun finished recently. That engraving looked like bubbles or a cobble street. I decided to try it on the flap of the darker hawk sheath here. Nope, didn't work out, but I finished it anyway. It was a good prototype for the second, brown sheath that received some adjustments. I have ordered some tools, and I am not finished with that "cobbles" idea yet.
Both are 4-5 ounce cowhide. The darker is my "finegaroon" (faux vinegaroon) color, the other a dark russet. Both done with Fiebing's Pro Dye. Linen stitched. Heavy welted under and in front of the blade for longevity.
The tomahawk is one that Walter Hill made, and I really love it. He's quite the blacksmith/artist.
God Bless, and Happy Father's Day, Marc

That was by far the trickiest pattern I've made yet. No way to lay it out with drafting gear. Just lots of poster paper, fitting, trimming, adjusting, and repeat. That's why finishing the first one was helpful. It advised the work on the second one.
I got a smile from Ron Hess' comment. He said the pattern looks like something a militia officer would have carried.

Marc, those are both very nice...and I agree, axe/hawk sheaths can be challenging to get laid out, without wasting some leather. I love the russet colored one...the tooling is super!

They look great.

I like them both. The cobblestone look is growing on me.

Aren't making/playing with patterns fun? I really like the progress you're showing on the covers, plenty of new ideas keep evolving and you're getting there in good shape. Really like your designs so far and excellent fit and finish! Thank you for sharing.Gary

Excellent Craftsmanship! Do they carry well with the strap placement?
-
They both hang pretty well, especially with a 2" belt versus narrower belts. I added a welt behind the top stitching on the strap to protect the stitching, and it makes the sheath hang better too. Next sheath I might make the strap asymmetric and wider at the top. The long handle weight mostly offsets the bit end, but it does not hang totally vertical unless on a 2" belt.
I think many would simply stick the combo in their waist belt. An uncovered hawk/axe in a waist belt with no cover would be perhaps....unwise today. I am sure it was done in the day, though I am also sure there were injuries from the same.
