Hey folks. I won the postal shoot that Taylor put on for June, so it is my turn to put it on for July.
Many of us have had our rendezvous and shoots cancelled for the year to protect those at risk from Covid-19.
I think these postal shoots are a good way for us to still have a bit of camaraderie and get out and burn some powder.
Parameters for this months shoot:
The distances will be 50 yards for rifles and smoothbores, and 35 yards if you'd like to shoot with a pistol.
This is to be shot offhand, or from a wheelchair etc if required.
The target will be the outline of a standard cd/dvd/video game etc...
Trace the small centre and the outside of the cd to make a small circle inside a big circle.
You can put it on any size paper/cardboard you'd like. I used posterboard.
Leave the centre circle as is, and colour the rest in with paint/marker etc.
The shoot will consist of 5 shots at the target.
Shots with at least 1/2 ball in the target will count for 5 points.
Any shot with at least 1/2 ball in the small centre circle will be worth 15 points (it is very small).
Highest possible score is 75, low score is zero.
If there is a tie, smallest group size will be the tie breaker.
I will allow up to 3 entries to show off your best target.
Please mark your targets with pistol/rifle, smoothbore and your name.
All you good shooters make sure you hold on to your targets if we need to measure for a tie breaker later.
The shoot will run through the end of the month, and there is a nice prize for first place.
The winner will recieve a brass cap/doodad box that I will engrave with their initials.
Have fun everyone. We had 17 shooters last month. I would like to see even more this month.
Good luck!!

Clarification....I'm assuming this is offhand ?
Next question is...multiple entries allowed ?
Thanks
-
I will adjust my post. Yes offhand, and I would say 3 reentries allowed. I want to see someone shoot a 75!
-
Sounds fun and an easy to make target.
-
I guess i'll just stay with hunting. I can't target shoot at 50 yds anymore.
Too much of an advantage for those with good vision.
Don't worry about it. It's the shooting that's fun; the score is not important. I'm going to try one target with my smoothbore, just for the heck of it . Then , one with the .40 The way I look at it, eventually we will all be at a disadvantage in everything we do, but I plan to ring every last bit of fun out of all of it ;D
-
Well said Bob!
-
I agree with my eyes it is going to be a tough target. But heck if was easy any 'ol darn fool could do it. Count the "Muskrat" in! Will try to get some targets posted soon just to show everyone how easy it is to best my score.
-
This type of target is easier than others because , if you put the circle in the centre of the paper, all you have to do is kind of aim there whether you can see it or not ;D
-
Just aim at the centre of the fuzz ball.
-
I love it. A challenge from Musky Mike for lowest score. Ur on buddy.
-
Oh, congrats Justin on the win and some good shootin.
-
Justin,
No CD's here, only LP's. Is that ok? :-) :-)
Really, I'd like to see a shoot that tested the rifle rather than the shooter. Off-hand is OK if you have time to practice, if not, a lean is always good. LOL
Just kidding Justin.
Richard.

haha maybe I'll let you shoot a 45 record if you're old enough to have bought them in their heyday, except Taylor. He gets a 25 yard handicap. haha

Haven't got a .75, only a .69, but - I could borrow one from my good buddy Keith. ;)

Daryl,
Every circus has it's clown, and this one has at least two of us. LOL!

If you can score 75 with your .69 I will bow down as your most humble student.
-
Justin................Let me guess. You're young and have 20/20 vision? Am I close? :)
-
The target is only 1/2 smaller in diameter than the black on a 25 yard pistol target. By the way shooting a pistol offhand means shooting it with one hand. We will all be shooting the same target. No whining.
-
Justin................Let me guess. You're young and have 20/20 vision? Am I close? :)
Well, I'm 34. 20-20 vision not so much.

You are a young whipper snapper, to most of us.
-
I gotta get this one done. Made a trip to the range and posted the squirrel target but first had to test fire a rifle that i had done some lock work on and then test a barrel that had been rebored. There was a light breeze when i got there that gradually turned to 33 mph!! :o
Stuff was blowing off the bench. A plastic tub with about 20 balls in it was sliding away!
So the target frame was put back in the shed with an unscathed squirrel on it. Hope someone had fun shooting at it. :)
The wind hit the door of the shed and knocked my elbow into the jam. I left a blood trail to the car.
Can't go any worse this time. :P
-
YIKES Mike- take care.
Here, if only this dang rain would stop!
-
Could use that rain here!
-
I've made up some targets. 1st one as directed. Used a LOT of marker. I found using black bristle board best,
cutting around the disk with good scissors then marking and punching the centre hold with a 13mm punch, which
is slightly smaller than the actual centre hole by about 1/16", but is easier.
Just waiting on Taylor for shooting this event.
-
I've made up targets too Daryl, out of black poster board. I traced a disc both inside and out, and cut them out with scissors and an X-acto knife. I measured the hole roughly at 9/16" but don't have a punch that size, so will be going with the inside pencil line and my knife. Double sided tape onto computer paper. It's supposed to be nice Sunday....have to drop Heather off at Soup Bus first, so early afternoon. What rifle are you going to use?
-
Well I made the target the same way Taylor and Daryl, glued it to a piece of copy paper and had 3 copies made when I went to the PO.
This morning the wind was under 8 miles an hour so I went to the creek bottom. I used my flintlock target rifle. It has a Douglass XX .45 caliber barrel. I used .451 cast balls with bear lubed Jo Ann's cotton drill 40, on top of 70 grains of Goex 3f powder. 50 yards set with a range finder.
I'm posting my second target which is the only one I took a photo of. Nothing to write home about, but it is not bad. The light was constant during the time that I shot the target.
(https://i.ibb.co/9cs43KQ/0703201003-Burst01.jpg) (https://ibb.co/pbJKrVY)
The other shot is the creek bottom I shoot at when the range is not open.

That's some good shooting. I didn't expect the first shooter to put 5 in a good group in the black like that. Save it for a tie breaker.
-
Good shooting. It's one thing to hit a, what? 4 11/16"" steel disk at 50yards on the trail, but another
to hit it 5 times in a row, well inside the edges. Well done alacran.
-
I just traced my disc out on some heavy 8x11 paper and stapled it to a piece of cardboard. I colored it with black marker. Im hoping to shoot this weekend. But its been mid 90s here and humid.
-
If you trace the disc on black construction paper, cut the outside edge carefully with a scissors and for the middle circle, a #9, 15mm gouge makes a perfect sized punch when used against a block of wood. I have a 9/13 Pheil gouge, a little small but good enough. If you have different radius small gouges, you could follow the inner circle tracing against a wood block and just "rock" your gouge (as in Kibler's tutorials) along the inner outline. Then take the disc, glue it to white copy paper and make copies!
-
Yes- could have done that, Bill, but I do not hold out much hope for many centre hits.
The 2mm smaller circle will just have to be as it is. I do have to glue them to larger
pieces of paper or cardboard, though.
-
YIKES Mike- take care.
Here, if only this dang rain would stop!
Wasn't as bad as it looked. :)
-
Hot day. Last target of the day after shooting weekly club postal matches. This is pretty good for me.

Is that rifle, pistol, or smoothbore?

Ahh. Rifle 50 yards offhand.

(https://i.ibb.co/wZtsGBt/IMG-1316.jpg) (https://ibb.co/PskQXFk) I went to range, shot two targets, will wait on the last one for later. As you can see I also posted the equipment I use, not looking to get one by anyone. Just shy of 61 and eyes aren't the same, not bad but not crystal clear. The lyman eye patch does help clear up the fuzz, not magnification just a tiny hole you look thru.If you want to compete you need to be able to see what your shooting at. So far as the sights, front is a thin fixed blade. The rear sight is an adjustable Micro sight, (not made anymore) made in California imagine that. The adjustment comes into play at 100 and 200 yards. 25 and 50 it's not really necessary. I shoot the same powder charge at 25 as I do at 200. Don't remember if equipment was discussed so putting it out there what I use. The difference between target one and two was more focus. After the first target , wasn't happy, so tried and stayed focused more, some time it works not always. Just wasn't ready to say shooting has passed me by. Thanks for keeping the monthly postal shoot going. I will try and shoot each month but we are entering the harvest season and free time gets less and less. If you think the equipment gives me unfair advantage , your more then welcome to remove them , no problems. Steve
-
Well done, Rich.
Decent group, Steven.
I think Taylor and I are shooting this tomorrow.
It'll be the B###H for me. Don't know what he'll be shooting.
-
Nice shooting Steve. Open sights are open sights!
-
Good shooting guys. That eye pal gizmo looks pretty handy. Some days my sights are a bit fuzzy .
-
Good shooting Steve and Rich. I think we are off to a good start.
Steve it is good to see someone who is not miserly with their powder charges. That 60 grain load of yours in your 40 cal is in the 2000 ft per second range. With adjustable sights, no need to change powder charges. I was still shooting Teflon patching when I was 60. Quit using it after Texas patching became unavailable. It took me about a year of experimenting to come up with what I am using today.
By the way the rifle I used for this match has Bomar sights, which I never fiddle with for offhand shooting.
Rich your group on a standard 8 ring black NMLRA target , all your balls would be in the 6 inch black. Good Shooting.
If we get points for age, I'm twice as old as Justin.
-
I have a new excuse for not shooting. You guys are too good.
I'd need to have my eyes as they were 20 years ago to be competitive.
Have fun guys. I'll just watch.
-
Well, one to present - not very good, scores 25.
I'm starting to think my effective hunting range has been reduced in the last few years.
Just hit 70, end of May.

-
Nice shooting for a big ball. What cal? Rifle or smoothie?
-
.69 cal. rifle. I'd be ecstatic if I could do that with a smoothbore at 50 yards.
-
Haha. Same here. I will shoot it with one of my .62 rifles and my 58 smoothie. But Im sure my best results will be with my 50 or 54 rifles. Smoothbore targets are so tough to be consistent with. You will shoot a couple good balls and a few bad balls. At least I do. Here is an example.

-
I got out and did a bit of shooting to see what I inflicted on you poor guys. The range was super busy (which was weird because it was monsoon type raining) so I just fired 9 shots at this one. That little centre is pretty elusive. I pulled one shot and accompanied it by some colorful language. It is not an easy one. Good luck everyone.

Had a short session yesterday with Daryl at our range...first decent day in three weeks. Like the rest of you, I found the 15 point dot to be illusive. So I scored 25 too. I shall make another attempt in the near future....

-
Well like I said it won't take much of a score to beat the 'ol "Muskrat" this month. This center is hard to see with these old eyes. Anyway got up today and it was only 56 degrees and very overcast so I loaded up and ran to the range. The center hole hit on the one target was just $#@* house luck. Anyway still better than not shooting at all and decent score for an old man. Out of the running but any time I am making white smoke I am a happy camper.

You're currently tied for high score. It's not over yet. 25 is respectable
-
It's amazing how small & how quickly that 4 11/16" black bullseye crosses my aim, as my sights dip and weave all over.
Gotta catch it on the way by.
-
Taylor thought the centre-hit was in. It's up to Justin to score it:
either 25 or 35. There are two in the top-left hole, one above the other.
When I put a ball in the centre-hole, it appears "in".
Same load as before, but reclaimed patches, this time.

The ball got stuck in the target?
More powder.
-
;D ;D That's just 1 out of 5, though. The others punched completely through.
-
I'd call that a 35 Daryl. Good shooting.
-
V Good, Daryl!
I'd have to shoot all day to do that. :-)
-
We need to shoot this again, Taylor.
-
Can't today Daryl...processing 40 pounds of cherries starting in a few minutes. The weekend is shot too with commitments. Early next week, perhaps.
-
If I can get out to the range I'll give the target a try. As I usually do I'll try for last place since I only got "second to last" one time before. For last place, I'm unbeatable. ???
-
Got targets (and excuses!) ready to go. Like hanshi I just have to get to the range.
-
Good shooting, Daryl! (From Darryl)
-
LOL - I'm as good once, as I once was all the time. Did pretty much the same yesterday, except I had 3 complete misses. Hard way to get 20 pts. ::)
-
As Daryl has said, we made an effort to shoot our second entry yesterday. I used my S. Hawken tribute rifle in .62 cal. the load it likes is 127 gr. FFg GOEX with .613" pure lead ball and .022" patch. And as usual, my first target was my best for the short time we shot. But this time, I shot a fouling shot first, since with some of my rifles, the first one is high and right, for reasons that allude me.
Anyway, here's my target: I score it a 30 which isn't good enough to come in first, but I leave it up to Justin for the final word.

50 yard offhand target...ate my lunch. :-[ I can drop down on my butt to a sitting position and keep all five in the black, but standing on my two hind legs is a different story. I can call my shots (good and bad) because I know where my sight was when the gun fired, just not steady enough to keep them all in the black. Guess that's why when hunting I take a rest on something whenever I can. A score of 15 points won't impress you guys much. Oh, I also shot a target with my .50 caliber. Bigger holes...same score. Guess it's not the gun, huh?
.36 caliber, 35 grains of 3fg, bear grease on a .020" patch and a .350 round ball.
(https://i.ibb.co/R2YyrkL/IMG-2007.jpg) (https://ibb.co/D4zpcH3)
-
Good shooting guys. It is not an easy target. Sure looks like a 30 to me, Taylor. 127 grains in your .62? Doesn't sound comfortable to shoot for very long. It probably is a 10+ lb rifle though.
-
Dowrat,
Same here, unsteady off-hand so not tried this target! :-)
When hunting, this means deer -sized at least, and it always seems irresponsible to not take a rest if possible, so never did practice off-hand.
Great to see the targets of those who Can shoot this way though!
V Nice group, Taylor!
V Nice rifle too!
Richard.
-
Thanks Richard. Daryl and I do a lot of offhand shooting, but most of it is on our trail, and gongs have a huge X ring. It makes a person sloppy. There's no room for sloppy when shooting this target of Justin's.
-
Good shooting! I didn't find the target quite as difficult as last month's squirrel, which is not to say I did well (miserably, actually). When I got home from the range, and closely examined the rifle, I found longitudinal cracks in the fore stock and one of the bbl. tenons off center. All issues are being addressed and the gun will be reassembled in a few days, then I can try to embarrass myself again in the July frolic: Can't blame the rifle this time!
-
Took a shot at July target today. Ugh. Best I could do today in 100 degree heat and oppressing humidity of the south. Today's rifle was a TVM southern rifle in 50 caliber. Will try again next week with my Lyman GPR.

Come on guys. You're not going to let a flukie score win, are you.
I get to choose the next target???????
-
It's been too darn hot here to do much at all, but we should see some relief tomorrow. I'm planning on shooting my target in the morning
-
Its been miserable here. And Im working Saturdays now. But I still plan to get each target shot by the end of the month.
-
I’ll do it too, on video again. I’ve finally got the house cleared of Texas family. Catching up on YouTube videos. One of which will be this shoot. Can’t wait.

Close to the load I use, Dowrat - except I'm finding 40gr. 3F GOEX works much better at 50yards and out. Rice .36.

Here's my entry for July:
(https://i.ibb.co/Yyx9wNQ/IMG-6370.jpg) (https://ibb.co/ZY0s7fX)
What looks like a 6th shot @ 9 o'clock is actually a tear in the paper where I stapled the black circle to the backer. Ditto for the one at 2 o'clock in the green area as the green card was not pierced there.
-
Nice group, Paul.
-
So close, and yet so far. really nice shooting Maven.
-
Thanks, Taylor! I'm happy to see that the cracked & repaired forestock is no longer a problem.
-
Tried again, posted for your amusement only.
Had a couple good shots- too bad it takes more than that.

Daryl and I have been out to the range to shoot our third target for this mail match, and so far, neither of us has been able to match our best score submitted. Today, I used my Joseph Lang 15 bore rifle and though I was able to keep most of my rounds in the black, the centre 1/2" dot has been illusive. Like Daryl, I submit this target for your perusal and not for score, but intend to try again for a better one - my third submission, so this is just to try to keep this thread active with submissions. And in view of the thread on Light loads, I tried 50 gr. in this rifle just for fun knowing 85 gr. is more accurate. I was still able to hit the black every time...just couldn't hit the centre dot.

Incidentally, those two 2 centre hits were my first 2 shots on that target, then the one on the right side, just in, then upper miss and left hand miss.
IT happens.
-
Daryl,
Good shooting both yourself and Taylor, but did you miss-mark your target? I see it says 25 yards, and the OP for this shoot said 50 yards....
-
Thanks for the heads-up, but it says 25 PTS Richard.
Now that I look at it again, I might have fired 6 shots.
The one left of centre, is about 1 1/3rd to 1 1/2 balls high. I don't remember now,
my back was hurting so much I wanted it over with. Either way, it makes
no difference.
-
Great shooting both you and Taylor!
-
Ah! Thank you Daryl!
I looked and looked at that, wondering what else it could be, but it still looked like "yds" on my screen!
Thanks again,
Richard.
-
Some darn good shooting from you guys. No excuse for ever missing a shot on game. ;)
-
Ah! Thank you Daryl!
I looked and looked at that, wondering what else it could be, but it still looked like "yds" on my screen!
Thanks again,
Richard.
If you LEFT click on the picture, it will enlarge. Then if you LEFT click on it again, it will again enlarge. - or you can key the Ctrl button and scroll the mouse button, or while holding the Ctrl
button down, you can key the + key and the page/picture will enlarge. Holding the Ctrl button and keying the 0 (zero) button will return the page to it's normal size for your computer.
If you are looking at this on a phone, all bets are off the table. Other than touching the screen then widening the fingers, I have no idea.
-
Well , I finally got to shoot a target today. I used a black crayon, because it's all I could find in my haste to get to shoot . Just for giggles, I figured I'd try 20 gr of 3F to see what would happen.
The 1st shot was low , so I adjusted my sight picture and fired the other 4 shots. Those two holes next to the centre couldn't possibly be any closer without scoring ..... :( I hope to get to try this target again before the end of the month
(https://i.ibb.co/7zP7fwh/OLYMPUS-DIGITAL-CAMERA.jpg) (https://ibb.co/wLVDk9t)
-
Real nice shouting there, Bob!
-
It's a decent group but not good enough :) BTW, the two next to centre weren't consecutive shots
They were #2 and #4
-
Excellent shooting Bob. You too Daryl and Taylor. You guys have a knack for shooting those big bores well. I'll need some practice when I get my .62 English sporting rifle together this fall.
-
LOL - I used to find shooting that big rifle easy. Not so much any more. I think it has to do with the single trigger, I think, even though it is a touch, under 3 pounds
and fairly, almost crisp. Holding it on target is not anywhere as easy as it used to be, for some reason.
Taylor's Lang, has a single set trigger - and VERY crisp and nice. Unset, it's a bit of a chore.
We're going to do this again, but with the little guns. ;D
-
That's a better group than you think, Bob. With that light powder charge, that is the best sized
group I could get at 50yards from my .36 shooting from the bench, double rested.
It needs over 30gr. to tighten up much better than that & 40gr. to shoot into an inch or better.
-
Daryl, I was surprised at how well the rifle did with that 20 gr load, however the first shot [ low ] shows just how much difference there is between this and the 30 gr charge I used at 25 yards. I used a well lubed linen spit patch . My usual everyday charge for this rifle is 40 gr of 3F . That is the charge I'll use when I shoot this target again.
-
My 48" twist Goodioen barrel liked 55gr. 3F (or 2F) with a water based lube for 50yards.
With LHV, it needed 65gr. 3F and 75gr. 2F to get the same accuracy AND POI, yet the vel.
with both of those was 2,240 iirc, compared to about 1,750fps & 1,720fps with the lighter
charges.

I shot the target again today. Managed to get some black construction paper , and glued to a sheet of copy paper. This time I used 40 gr 3F, and to my surprise , the shots all tended to hit lower , almost , but not quite the same area as the 20 gr load. Probably has something to do with barrel time/recoil etc
I have to remember to take more front sight when aiming

I wrote a note on the target, but it's not too clear. The lower right hole is actual 2 shots. It's a little more evident if looking at the paper from the back. I'm scoring this at 25.
-
THAT is a nice 50 yard offhand group, Bob! Well done. ;D
-
I agree! Well done!! Thats gonna be a tough group to beat. Did u measure it?
-
Just measured it now. The upper holes c to c are 2 inches apart . From the upper left hole to the bottom enlarged hole [ 2 shots] is 1 5/8ths and from the upper right to those two is 1 inch So,
2 inches x 1 5/8ths x 1 inch
This .40 that I built about 10 years ago , fits me perfectly for summer shooting. When I bring it up, the sights are on. I used to want more weight up front and was sorry I used an A weight swamped barrel at first, but now that I'm officially in my senior years , I've come to really like it. The Davis triggers are set very light, and that is a tremendous help.
-
That's an outstanding group for 50 yards offhand, Bob. Nicely done.

Target for the July shoot. The barrel waves around like a magicians wand trying to shoot this one.

Better than my 1st attempt Bro. At least you kept them on the paper and put some in the black. 8)

Good job everyone who has shot the match so far. I see some really good targets. Everybody only has 2 more days to shoot and enter your targets. Aim small, miss small.
-
Had the truck loaded all week. Between job interviews, Dr appts, etc, keep running out of daylight. Ill try again tomorrow.
-
Going to try again now and hopefully have something to post. Last attempt was "zero" and not worth posting.
-
I tried again yesterday, too windy. Here is one I shot earlier in the month.

There are 3 targets, correct?? 50 yd smoothie, 50 yd rifle, and 35 yd pistol? How do u know what people are shooting if they dont say what the target is?
-
The way I understand this, Keith, is 3 targets are allowed for score, in each category.
With the targets so far put up, I just assumed they were all rifle targets shot at 50 yards.
Had someone used a smoothbore or pistol, I'd think they would have said so - that was my understanding.

I shot my final target this morning. I really like shooting this original Joseph Lang hunting rifle, but I seem to have a propensity for throwing one ball off the bull. The old grey mare (me) she ain't what she used to be...but apart from the flyer which I know was me, I'm happy with me offhand group.
Can't wait for next month's event....

OUTSTANDING TARGET, except for that snow bird! I've had my fair share of those.
-
I'm happy with my targets...both of them. Nice shooting done by all. There's a big big difference between 25 yards and 50 yards when shooting off hand. One of my favourite targets for hosting a match here on my property amongst friends is the NMLRA novelty target. Even at 25 yards, it humbles some of the best shooters.
-
I shot 1 target with my new SMR .45 tonight. 1st shots ever out of it. Scored a 10. Shooting a little low.
Then shot 2 targets with my new Dodds .50 rifle. Scored 10 on both of them. Shot 60 gr 3f on 1st target and shot a little high. Shot 50 gr on 2nd target and shot a little low.
I shot a target with the Dodds a couple weeks ago with 55g 2F and shot a 20 with a nice tight 4 shot group and 1 flyer.
Cant wait for next month. Hopefully weather will be cooler and Ill stop working 6 days a week. Congrats and good shooting guys.

Can't wait to see what the winner selects for our August "postal match".
Here is an idea.
2 different targets shooter picks which one they want to shoot at. First is at 50 yards or further for 39 caliber rifles, smooth bores and trade guns. Second is a different target at 30 yards or closer for 36 caliber or smaller, a true squirrel shoot.
Just an idea. Everyone has a favorite firearm let them choose which they want to shoot.
-
Or a 2 man team. Teams are drawn and the scores are added together.
-
I call "dibs" on Daryl or Justin.
-
Since Fall Friendship has been cancelled I suggest a ‘woodswalk’ shoot for this month. One shot on 5 targets at different distances sort of thing...
....not that I’ve earned a say....
-
My 2nd target, at least I found black today.

Hay-time here, and real Humid! Takes forever to dry.
Still got 200 + acres to do...No time for shooting..
-
I miss your participation Richard. But I understand the commitment.
-
Good shooting Daryl. I saw that you already have the shoot for August. Send me your address, and the initials you'd like engraved on your prize.

TKS Justin, - PM sent.
