Title: Horns my dad made
Post by: 577SXS on August 11, 2020, 05:25:08 PM
My dad enjoyed carving wood and he also made fox horns. I asked him to make a flat powder horn for me and he did. He was a surveyor and had beautiful hand writing so I asked if he could do some scrimshaw on it also. My dad had scrimshawed several fox horns with maps. I was a big deer hunter wanted a deer on the horn. Now my dad being a fox hunter hated deer with a passion so it was kinda hard to get him interested but he did it anyway. After seeing the deer scrimshaw my dad had done A friend asked me if he would do a turkey horn for the Wild Turkey Federation. My dad agreed and he had to figure out how to do the colors of the turkey. When he finished the horn my mom said that there was no way he was going to give this horn away!!!! One of my brothers has it now. I thought it would be nice to share these with people that would enjoy seeing them. My dad wouldn't make anything to sell he just gave what he made to friends and family. These horns were made a long time ago. My dad has been gone for 13 years.

I had forgotten about several other horns my dad had made. I thought about a box of horns I had brought from my dad's shop when we cleaned it out. I went down into my shop and found some treasures. As I said my dad was a surveyor and this horn has and old map of North Carolina on it.

Here is one with Durant Island on it. Durant is an island in the mouth of the Alligator River in NC. I got lost on it and spent the night on a tussock.

I love this surveyor horn. Very surveyor-y. My direct Rev War ancestor was a surveyor. One of those who surveyed Georgia just after the ‘purchase’. Super.

Thanks for the compliments, There are many more floating around that my dad made for other people and I know of several more map horns. I'm going to see if I can get photos of those. My dad never stopped doing something. No telling how many he made over the years and I had forgotten he had made so many. Glad I remembered the box of horns was in my shop before the bugs got to them.

Wondering if your dad knew Buck Buchanan and his shop in Fayetteville?

Yes and I have known Buck since I was a little kid. I used to cast muzzleloader balls for him to sell. Saw Buck a week or so ago.

All of the horns made by you father are exceptional but the last one is outstanding. It looks like his precision in surveying translated over into his horn making. Thanks for sharing you fathers art.
Cheers Richard
