I found this article in the November, 1944 issue of Muzzle Blasts Magazine. Has anyone seen a rifle like this? I hope the text in the short article comes through (if not here is a short description). "The rifle was made by William Palmer a gunsmith in Rochester, England in what year I have no idea. The flash pan and the nipple are in one piece and this screws into the barrel below its center on the flat, flash hole is drilled in the barrel to coincide with the hollowed out portion of the flash pan. The lower jaw of the hammer is made very heavy and is hollowed out like any percussion hammer to strike the nipple."

That is pretty cool. You have to cover all your bases.

I've never seen a rifle with that type dual ignition system, but several pistols with that feature are discussed and illustrated in "Early Percussion Firearms" by Winant. He states that, "many gunmakers experimented with dual ignition systems, but that only two makers, both English, produced more than a few examples....Davis was one; Ezekiel Baker was the other . The Davis lock was patented in 1822 ....."

I knew a guy that loved flintlocks so much that when he built his wife a rifle, it was a percussion, but the frizzen covered the nipple. Until it was cocked you didn't know it wasn't flint.

THANKS GUYS! Just was talking to a "man" in our shooting group who swore I was in the jug too much tonight. Guess you'll help me prove him wrong!

Houston Harris, Nashville, gunmaker made his son a youth rifle with that same dual system. Had a chance to buy gun, pouch and horn all by his hand. Short of cash and sold before I could get it together.
