Title: Sept 2020 ALR postal match
Post by: bob in the woods on September 02, 2020, 03:48:50 AM
I hope this target that I have chosen will be a fun shoot.  Standard 8 x 10 photo copy paper

Off hand at 25 yards.   You can enter up to 4 targets if you want .

It is a 5 of Clubs    One shot at each " club"       Score is as follows:   Ball in the black = 10

Ball touching the black = 9     Ball in the "stem" = 10 X

Ball in the white= 0

I have tried this target before, and it was fun.

I hope my attempt at posting this target work !

I'm offering a brass adjustable powder measure [ Chambers ]  as a prize to the winner.

Okay, I'll be the first to ask, how may points for hitting one of the "little" clubs under each number? Just asking.
Challenge offered, challenge accepted.

Ball in the black of the club = 10 points.  If you want to aim at the little one, go ahead !  ;)

I'm not computer savvy at all, but I did scan the target , which got me a PDF file. Then , after much tinkering, I got it changed into a JPEG file which allowed me to post it as a photo.
I can send it as a PDF file if you send me your e-mail address....or perhaps Daryl can somehow work some magic and make it printable ?

Do a right click on the photo of the target and chose "save as" then save it to where ever on you computer you wish, I use my photos. Then print the photo.
If you prefer I can mail you the photo.

That's exactly what I did, Dennis. However, once on my desktop, I right clicked on the picture, selected print, then from the print screen, I chose "Letter". That gave me this:

If I enlarged it on my desktop first, then picked print, I got this, quite a difference. Bob will have to decide which one is proper. Looks like my first one was proper.

That i why I am asking. I've had this situation printing other graphics from a page. Different sizes come up on different printers. Maybe give dimension center to center on the top cloverleaves.

The first copy is correct.  The 2nd looks out of proportion re a normal playing card.
Measuring across the horizontal widest point of the " club" is 1 11/16ths inches to my eye.

Post by: Daryl on September 03, 2020, 08:07:42 PM
OK - but I measure the club as being 1.695".  1 11/16th would be 1.688".

Bob - could you measure it with calipers, please?

I measure the little one I posted above as being 1.382".

Hi Daryl and others.   1.695 or 1.7    I guess it depends on the printer.   I don't mind spotting anyone a 5/1000th difference  :)

Bob:  I've a question about the Sept target....

To score a 10, I assume half the ball must be inside the black.  Similarly, for the 10X...half ball to score, otherwise, just a lousy 10.  I understand that just a touch scores 9 on either the bulbous part, or the stem.

N'est pas?

Looks to me like a 30 for the second target, StevenV. So close with the other 2 shots.
Those holes look small. Taylor and I will shoot the target, this coming week.
Title: Re: Sept 2020 ALR postal match
Post by: bob in the woods on September 07, 2020, 01:17:27 AM
I enlarged that 2nd target of Steven's , and when I overlay a cutout of the club on that one shot in the
stem, it actually just makes it as an " X "  [ The flair at the bottom of the stem did it ] , so I'm going to call it a 30   X
It's the score to beat so far !
Title: Re: Sept 2020 ALR postal match

Certainly appears that way to me, Bob. So
30 1X is the score to beat.
I think I'll use my 14 bore rifle, but with 16 bore balls this time.

Taylor and I went out to the range this afternoon to shoot the Postal match. Unfortunately, he grabbed the wrong shooting box
and ended up with a rifle and no "gear" to go with it. He did hang around and watched me shoot. Nice guy. Nothing like a little
stress to go with it.
Anyway, I shot a very poor 'sighting-in target and then this one, not much better, but better.
We scored is as a 37 or 38. No X's. The scoring is up to Bob. The target tore upon removal from the board.
The "0" was my last shot, of course.
We'll try to get out again in the near future.
('Course, he could score that middle target as 2 9's????? LOL)
The larger ball counts on gong targets as well as game animals.

Title: Re: Sept 2020 ALR postal match
Post by: Daryl on September 13, 2020, 08:12:55 AM
Absolutely, Bob.  I was quite surprised the undersized balls shot as well as they did and with a load that doesn't
seal, however, there must be some decent obturation with those balls as there was no fouling buildup at all.  I will
have to try them at longer ranges.

Post by: Daryl on September 13, 2020, 11:01:53 PM
Taylor and I got out to try it again. This time, I think I have mostly centre hits with one winger.
We scored it with an overlay target and figured it to be a 49 2X or 48 1X - but, the final word it up to Bob.
Taylor was having trouble seeing his sights on the clubs.

49 2 X  !!!!   The Club's shape does kind of make it difficult to get a good sight picture , and the upside down ones help to complicate things  :)     Great shooting !
Did Taylor get a chance to shoot ?

Thanks Bob - I suspect after our next attempt, he will submit a target. He had considerable trouble with his sight picture using the .25. Made some good shots and some not so good.

Here are my two not-so-good submissions for September.  I sort of confirmed what I suspected all along; i.e., in my rifle (Chambers I. Haines, R. Rice bbl.), the ball cast from the RCBS .530" mould is more accurate, relatively speaking, than the .530" ball from a Tanner mould, all else being equal of course.  Btw, there was another shooter close by which made shooting with a mask on a bit interesting as my glasses fogged up a bit:  removing the mask help eliminate the fogging, but not my poor aim.  Although hard to see, there is actually a hit in the center of the middle club on the top target.

Glad to see a couple more target submissions, Maven.
Glad you got out.
Taylor and I got out again today, and I have 2 targets to submit, shot with my .50 Beck- 44" bl.
Same charge, both targets - 60gr. 3F Old Enysford 10oz. Denim I measures (new batch) at .021" compressed in my calipers.
Spit for lube - patches cut with bearing race and large ball bearing.
30 and a 29 (or 28?)

Good shooting, Daryl!  I'll try again next week.  Btw, I'm now using Graf's (GOEX FFg) and don't find it especially dirty and certainly no dirtier than actual GOEX that I just finished. I'll do a better job on the next pics too (LOL).

Seems to me IIRC - a 40 & maybe another 40.

I used my old Joseph Lang .66 cal rifle today, and did better than I did with the . 25 cal longrifle.  I score this target a 40 but defer to Bob ITW's decision of course.  I found the target difficult...most difficult target so far.  The rifle isn't meant for shooting at 25 meters - it's lowest sight is engraved 100 which I take for 100 yards.  So I pulled the bead down into the bottom of the notch and aimed 2 1/2" low in order to hit the clubs.  And I didn't get them all, damit.  Still,I'm not dissatisfied with my target, posted below.  Will try again next week with my Voluptuous Virginia .50 cal.

Thanks for posting your target , Taylor.  Looks like a solid 40 to me.   Even though those " clubs" aren't the smallest targets we've had, the shape seems to make them a lot more difficult than you'd think.
We've used the 5 of hearts card as a target before, and it seemed to be easier...all off hand at 25 yards.
I'm hoping that more take up the challenge and shoot this target before month's end.

I got over to the Rose Iris Range at Rattlesnake mountain and shot this one. I just couldnt get in the zone. I hunted up a couple patches and never found a one that wasnt ripped. Never seen the like before. They were some old prelube jobs that seemed like they should work fine but what a disaster. I will get another one done this next weekend and go back to my old pillow ticking. You guys are shooting great. Must be sumthin in the water up north of the border. ;D

Well I shot this with my .36 squirrel rifle about a week ago. First let me say I don't like the target. I can see this devolving into every one who wins posting a more asinine target than the one before.
I used it for practice for a squirrel camp I went to last weekend. I shot at this target and Taylor's squirrel target. I shot at the squirrel target with the .36 and a .58 Hawken I'm working on. I got quite a few .36 balls in the squirrel head and one on the branch just for kicks. I shot 5 with the .58 and those completely obliterated the majority of my hits with the .36.  I doubt that I will be able to shoot any more at this months target. Since I'm preparing for a trip back east.
The reason I don't like the target is that it really doesn't promote good practice. I believe Taylor said last year that the shooting should not be about who has the best vision, or something to that effect.
By the way Taylors target should be scored a 50 since he did hit the small club with more than half a ball . Bob said " if you want to aim at the little one go ahead" . I read that to mean that if you hit one it should count the same way as a big one.

By my figuring as to Bob's scoring I score it a 29 2x since I touched one of the clubs with the ball LOL.
(https://i.ibb.co/9vhMSFh/0907201221-Burst01.jpg) (https://ibb.co/wL7vj97)
I had much better luck with squirrels. These are the first four of the eight I shot this last weekend. Five of the eight were clean head shots.

As was brought to my attention, this should be scored as a 50  . if my comment made in jest is taken into account, however that was not the intent of the original post , so the score of 40 remains

With close inspection, I see Taylor's target, if scoring the little club, a 49 as there appears, not 1/2 a ball in that club.
Thus 49/50.

I have tried this target before, and it was fun.

So - it appears this was a 9-shot target, not a 5-shot target & with the ball IN THE STEM(doesn't say 1/2 ball), Taylor's target does score 50

thus, I have to take my 49 2X out and put 4 more shots on it.
Title: Re: Sept 2020 ALR postal match
Post by: bob in the woods on September 23, 2020, 01:52:02 AM
The intent was for shooting at a 5 of clubs card....ie   5 shots total ....possible score of 50 5x
Because I jokingly made a comment about shooting at the small club if you want to, it was taken to heart by someone,

I've altered this post, since it reflected my frustration, more than anything else.
It certainly appears that the interpretation made by the majority of shooters was in line with my intent...this based on their own posted scores.
Altering the scoring based on my misplaced humour was a mistake on my part, and unfair .
The 5 large clubs are the obvious targets, 1 shot at each.  Any other markings are decorative, and a hit on a small club is a result of missing the large club , so it doesn't count
.
I apologize for the misunderstanding, and hope that there will be many more targets posted.
After all, getting out for some shooting was the purpose of these matches

I agree 100% with Bob...I was not aiming at the little club, so that one is a clean miss, scoring 0.  I stick with my original posted score 40.

I'll shoot a 50 next time out, no worries.

I shot targets two and three today.  It's funny that I just can't seem to hit five for five!  I used my favourite offhand rifle, a Chambers' Virginia rifle designed by Mark Silver.  When I ordered the set, I asked Barbie if she had a .50 cal barrel that would replace the .58 or .62 that the parts set normally comes with, and she was happy to oblige.  Now I wish I'd gone with the bigger bore(s) as I now find the rifle a little on the heavy side at 10 pounds, for continuous offhand work.  "The old grey mare"...you know how it goes.  I hope to get out again before the end of the month...may give the Verner a chance.  Here's today's results...last detail:  72 gr. FFg GOEX.

Thank you Bob.  I gave up trying to hit the stems....most of those efforts ended in a complete miss, usually to the left.  It was fun to shoot at the clubs with a rifle I could hold the sights right on the target, instead of aiming 2 1/2" low like with the Joseph Lang .66 cal.  I want to try for a better score again soon.

I don't clean between shots, so I have to shoot and load very slowly to avoid barrel mirage from overheating.  If I rush it at all, I cannot rely on the club being where it appears over the sights.

Good shooting, Taylor!  As you can see from today's targets, I'd be happy with even three hits.

Glad you got out shooting Paul.  That's what these monthly shoots are all about.

Taylor,

I'll weigh the rifle and get back to you.  I think under ten pounds, but thinking is no good. LOL.

Thanks, Daryl.  Hope the smoked salmon turned out well (It's a favorite of mine, btw).

Oh yeah - turned out super with roughly 8 1/2 hours of smoke. Some got a bit dry in the tails, but that's OK. It will soften up
once it's thawed again. There are about 16 freezer bags of fish now, in the freezer. I have another batch to do, maybe next
week if we get some good weather. I need to cut some more alder.

Taylor and I got out again today. Shot a bunch of targets, this is the best for me today
& my last submission.
Not sure if that top left is a 10 X, a 10 or a 9.
Tough target.
No wiping.
The patches show some blowby in the grooves, however the patches held up just fine,
no cuts, no tears, no weak spots.
I measure them at .030" compressed with calipers, however they do not quite seal, even though
the numbers say they do. .714" for groove to groove and .722" on material + ball dia. Very easy loading.

Tks, Richard - just lucky.
The actual group size is over an inch I make it at about 1.327".
We, Taylor and I used to be able to shoot under an inch, oft times well under, at 25 yards offhand.
As Taylor noted a few days ago, that rifle has been good to me.
He built me that rifle in 1986. After reading Forsyth, 3 or 4 times, I just HAD to have
a 14 bore rifle.

I shot a 49 yesterday with Daryl, but I'm not going to post it, going to try one more time for a 50.  How hard can it be?

Well, last day of the September event, so I went out alone this time and tried for a 50...no such luck.  I shot four targets this afternoon, and had a 40 1X after four shots...fifth shot went almost two inches from the club.  So here I am posting the target I shot the other day with Daryl, a 49.  Can't wait 'til next month's postal shoot.!

Taylor, that was a fabulous score.  A hair's breath away from a 50 .   I think all of the targets submitted were great examples of off hand shooting ability, and I thank all who took part in this month's match.
I'm going to go out on a limb here, seeing that it's after 10 PM in our time zone, and declare Daryl the winner of the match with his awesome score of 49 2X !!     I truly hope that everyone had fun, since that is what this is all about  :)
I look forward to shooting next month's target . It's up to Daryl to surprise us !

Thanks Bob - and all who participated.  I was wondering if Taylor was going to attempt a last day shoot. Glad he got out.
I was feeling a little under the weather this morning, but an fine now.

Congrats Daryl for the win.  And some good shooting for the others.  I hope to shoot Octobers now that our OT is done.
