Once I had a 42" 3/4 .36cal. rifle.  Makes a really slender rifle.  Should fun to shoot.

It is a .42 caliber.  It is also 42 inches.  So I guess that makes it a 42/42.  I just finished a 42 inch barreled rifle in a .36

Cory Joe, I, too, just started a Gillespie with a hoyt .38 barrel.  Breech plug and tang are inletted and ready to put in the lugs.  Trying to copy that early Matthew Gillsepie without a buttplate.

Thanks, Cory Joe!  Keep us posted as you build, please, Sir.  I dearly love them Gillespies!

We all know that Dennis is the "Godfather of all things Gillespie", and he's always there with help and answers to questions.  He is the man that got me started building Gillespies.  He knows stuff...and plenty of it!

That five-lined skink youngster you’ve got there is a beauty. Are you training it up as a shop helper?  One of those ended up in the house recently. Tricky to catch and transport back outside.

Going to try and train it to pollish locks.

Just be patience, Cory Joe. They are not quick learners. I think the one in my shop has only learned to hide parts so far.

That included bark/knot should prove to be an interesting feature. I see that the knot hole disappeared! I’ll bet it was touch and go there for awhile. Rock on!

It was. I was hoping some of it would stay.  There is some nice figure there.

Thanks

It does have a good bit of drop. The profile is patterened after a late Gillespie that had a back action percussion lock. When I first cut the blank out I was afraid I had gone too far. Now that the shaping is done it feels pretty good.

I made the rear sight. I ran across a neat looking rear sight in Dennis' book and went by it.

Yep, you were able to get really good color out of that stock.  As for making the rear sight, kudos to you, they aren’t that hard to make, just hard to hold onto while making them!

Nice lizard. I believe that is a blue tail skank and they have them in Illinois, at least the southern parts.

Is that a blunderbuss in the photo?

Don't know what you've got on there but the finish process is looking great. Can't wait to see how it comes out. Nice work.

Tim. It is the method Jim Kibler shows in his youtube videos. Tannic acid then iron nitrate, rubbed back.

Once you get the dovetails cut, it’s easy to hold on to.
