Title: Does this mid 1800's stock/school have a name?
Post by: BruceH on September 11, 2020, 11:02:41 PM
I have a little interest in building one of these perch belly mid 1800's rifles.  I am curious if they ever had a specific name/school assigned to them?  I am trying to do a little research into them and I believe a better name than perch belly would help.  Thanks in advance.

I have seen a lot of later ML guns from the north east that have convex toe to guard profiles. I never put the idea together before I saw your picture , but the side hammer gun you show is certainly adescendent of the Hudson River fowlers of 100 years before

As mentioned, typical of Western NY mid-1800's percussion guns & also some of the gunmakers who moved west from there. These are usually called perch belly shaped stocks. For excellent examples, look up H.V.Perry's guns. I'd send you some pictures, but am traveling for a while

OLUT, that name helped a lot for researching this style of rifle.  Thanks.
