Title: Leather Covered Horn
Post by: Tim Crosby on September 15, 2020, 04:35:07 PM: Making a pattern and fitting the leather was quite a challenge, these are not going to become a regular thing.
It is about 13 3/4 around the outside curve and 11 3/4" tip-to-tip. The Maple butt is about 2 1/2" hollowed out about 3/4s its length and held by 10 Brass tacks. The tip is two piece antler held together by three pins and to the horn with three more. The leather is Deer hide sewn along the seam with a saddle stitch. It is sewn skin side out and treated with a Dark Brown Carnauba wax followed by a coat of Brown shoe polish and brushed.
I may yet put a staple somewhere in the neck for a strap but the tip works well as it is.

The owner said the maker had put a green deer leg hair on skin on it to strengthen it. It had dried like a glove and by the time I saw it most of the hair was worn off.

Tim: There was an article in Muzzleloader magazine a few years ago showing how to make a pattern to cover a glass bottle. It looked perfect for a horn template. I wanted to do one exactly like yours but never got to it. Perhaps this is how you made your pattern. If I still have the magazine I'll post the issue # if anyone's interested.

No directions, trial and error, that's the way I do most things so I'm used to it.
