Title: Bag #34 Hessian or Wellington Boot Bag Interpretation
Post by: Marcruger on September 19, 2020, 04:03:52 PM
Hi Folks,

This is my interpretation of the Hessian or Wellington boot bag as discussed in the 2014 thread below.

https://americanlongrifles.org/forum/index.php?topic=28449.0

Something caught my eye in the crazy shape, and I decided to make one with the same silhouette.  A few changes of course, like lining the flap to give it some body and reduce the "curl" of the original's flap.  I also could not tell the way the strap was attached.  It appears that the bottom of the original strap was folded in half and inserted into the seam.  I went the conventional route.

The bag body is very soft lambskin laminated to soft suede cowhide.  Dyed black with Pro Dye.  Goatskin top edge opening inside.  Very supple but strong bag body when done.  Also a cowhide stiffener/strap anchor inside the top back.  Top flap is 2-3 ounce tooling leather with the same suede lining. A little over 7" square.  Irish waxed linen 4-ply thread.  In spite of the way the photo looks, the stitching is dark and less contrasting in person.

I had serious doubts as to whether it was a functional design when I started.  Turns out to be very nice and easy to use.  The slightly aged finish looks pretty convincing in person.  The first photo below is the original.  Last photo is a pair o' Hessian boots for comparison.

I hope y'all enjoy it.  God Bless,   Marc

It looks good all around and that’s a neat buckle you’ve got on the strap.

Another dandy bag, my friend!  I was in your neck of the woods yesterday...went with a friend to look at a construction project in Chapel Hill...passed through Winston-Salem both directions. If I’d been by myself, I’d have liked to check out Old Salem...maybe next time!

I am beginning to see your style develop Mark. I have wanted to make this bag for a while but have not had the time. You did it proud.

"I am beginning to see your style develop Mark."

James, I hope the developing style is not for making funny looking bags.   :-)   Lol.  Got to say that is one odd looking bag, but hopefully someone will want a bag based on an authentic design.

Many thanks to all for the kind words.   God Bless,   Marc
