1/2 ball rule for higher score, ie: centre white 10 points, black scores 9 points
only one ball in each target, total 9 shots
up to four submissions
please shoot at 25 yards offhand

Questions?

...only 29 days left!
-
What range is it supposed to be shot at? ;)
-
How could I have missed that?
25 yards offhand...thanks.
-
Nine shots for record, four subs. That should get some powder burned and make sure everyone gets a flyer or two.
Enjoy seeing the competition from afar. I hope to participate each time and well, you'll see my targets when I make holes in some. I printed off one months targets, but didn't get out warm-up stage.
Congrats Taylor on last month, and thanks to all who keep this thing going.
nine shots...mumble..I gotta get a smallbore finished!
-
Just about ran out of powder yesterday on the trail. Taylor, I and 2 local chaps shot the trail.
I've re-filled my horn and raring to shoot. Bit too windy & rainy today. Next to no snow left.
-
Well, somebody has to go first. I figured I would give it a try before the weather turns this week. It was a crazy windy day though. Worse than the shoot in Ashcroft last month. The first two were misses, but it got a little better after that. I think we should use the middle target for the tie breaker. Haha

Looks like a 75/90 to me, Justin. Well done. That middle one is almost centered. Nice.
-
... I think we should use the middle target for the tie breaker. Haha
Haha, I agree completely. I think Taylor won't have to work out any ties this match, even with four entries. And that's a hard shot to beat. It's a short month, Today was a nice one for it.
-
Nice indeed- WOW. 16C is 60.8F - That's early fall temp.
We also had a warm day, got up to 12C (53.6F) today, but rained all day with fairly high winds too 40mph.
Hope we can shoot tomorrow. Supposed to be 8 and cloudy.(46F)
Nice holes in the target with the fresh cardboard backer, too.
-
Daryl I want to apologize to you for not submitting any entries for the October match. But I have been busy hunting deer and squirrels in Illinois and really haven't had the time to do any serious shooting. Will be back in AZ in a week and will make a serious attempt at Taylor's
target. I think I have about a one week window, between a rendezvous and a Coues deer hunt. Taylor congratulations on your fine shooting in October.
-
Thanks for your entry Justin. Daryl should probably let me do the scoring since I will not be scoring myself this month.
Justin's target earns a 65 (5 x 9) + (2 x 10) I'm anxious to try this one out too, before the weather goes nastier.
-
Thanks alacran. I was somewhat puzzled you didn't submit an October target, but thought likely had to do with hunting season.
Hope you had a good time.
;D - spot-on Taylor.
-
I have decided upon a prize for the November match...it's listed in TOW's catalogue as a Gentleman's folding knife. I have several and like to have one in the bottom of my haversack bag. I have sharpened this one, so it comes ready for use.

That's a beautiful knife.
Im done big game hunting except for guiding grandkids . Hope to be able to shoot this round.
-
Here is my first attempt. Those circles really got small at 25 yards. Try again next week. I scored it a 55. ..50 caliber, 55 gr of Goex ,3f, 490 ball and 015 patch. Out of the gate good but faltered in the end. That's the story of my life.

-
I'm glad you participated, Dave. Looking forward to some more targets.
Taylor and I went out today. I faltered with a 54 or 55, by the looks of it.
I seem to be favouring the bottom left of the target - might have been the light, or just me.
8 out of 9 shots are in 1-1/8th inches & I had called the 2:30 9, a miss - surprise.

I'm gratified to see some targets filtering in. This target though quite visible at 25 yards is tricky, especially when the barrel heat up and the bull starts floating around. And these eyes cannot focus on the 10 ring: if it was a single white dot on a black sheet of paper, maybe. but there's a lot going on with the target, and it's easy to get overwhelmed. Hint: the longer you stare over the sights, the more the bull's eye seems to settle down, but don't be fooled. Your eyes are playing tricks.
Full disclosure on my target: I have already declared that I am not participating, so I'm just adding my target for fun, and that takes a certain stress out of shooting it. That last bull in the lower right: I had decided to drop my rifle and take a rest, but in doing so, it went off and the ball went through the centre anyway. Ask Daryl: I called it a complete miss off the paper, but lo and behold! For what it's worth...

-
He did call it a complete miss.
But- the one centre bottom I'm not sure. ;D
-
Very nice shooting Taylor!
In an appropriate thread, I'd like to see how you finished up that rifle, just to compare it with mine. (same rifle but in .58)
-
I can do that...will start a new thread tomorrow. Thanks for the compliment.
-
He did call it a complete miss.
But- the one centre bottom I'm not sure. ;D
protest! ;D
but then he's only showing out this round. 8)

There were two shots on my target that I had to drop a .495" ball into to be sure, and they were so close, I gave myself the benefit of the doubt, just as I would with any contributor. It's not like there's a Lexis on the line.
-
Very nice shooting Taylor!

I just did the same thing on the middle right target - with the .682" ball I'm using. The line goes right through the centre of the sprue,
so I guess I shortchanged myself on the count, so it is a 64, still not good enough, however the middle target is a 10 easily.
6x9 = 54
1x10 = 10

Some nice shooting there, guys!
-
I have edited my score records. Scoring by the half ball is far more difficult than by just a touch. It is useful to eliminate bore size differences though, and is why I chose it for this match. If I am fortunate enough to win another one of these monthly affairs, I shall use the 'by the touch' method of scoring. The numbers will be larger, but someone will still post a best score...for another event.
-
Excellent shooting, gentlemen!
-
I'll do my best to try and get one submitted for this match... Just have to see how it goes. Between rotating shifts and iffy weather it's hard to commit to anything right now.
Mike
-
The weather here is non-conducive too. If this match continues over the winter, it is unlikely that I will be able to participate...my hands feel the cold to the point that it isn't fun. But I hope y'all will make the sacrifice for this month's match.
-
Tomorrow is supposed to get up to a balmy +2° so I'll try to get out and shoot another target or two.
-
Taylor, you need a heated " shooting shed" like I had at the last house. A bench across one side of the 8 x 8 foot shed, with barn door window above and a wood stove in the corner . I shot thousands of rounds from that shed all through the year :) I need to build another one .
-
That's a great idea Bob. I'll have to build one too. Would be nice to be able to shoot more when it's really cold. I think a ventilation fan would be important for flintlocks.
-
Not an option for this child. I live in the city, so have a fifteen minute commute to get to the range. If I lived in the country, I'd be all over that.
-
Amazing seeing reports of snow conditions and sub freezing temperatures. We are having 70 to 80 degree rays here in East Tennessee. Been like this for weeks now.
-
Well, I got out to the range today, and shot another target. Definitely better than last time. 2° and a bit breezy today. I'm not too sure about that middle target.

That is some very nice shooting, Justin.
-
Nice target Justin! I call your centre target a "9" so your total is (6 x 9) + (3 x 10) = 84! thanks for sending this in...we got about 6" of snow in town today...imagine you got similar.
Keep 'em coming my friends.....
-
Thanks guys. Yeah, we probably had about 6", and we got another 3" so far this morning with more on the way. I got an electric snowblower last year. Sure beats shoveling.
-
Well done, Justin. Bit too cold for me, but time will tell, not quite 1/2 way through the month. I don't seem to be acclimatizing very well
this year. Maybe I should get out of the house more? ;D
Just went out to the shed to retrieve a power cord to plug in the truck. -8 - about 18F for our American friends. The end of my index finger
of my left hand froze - how about that? Ahh- when I turned the steel lock lever on the shed - compressed the skin and bingo, frozen digit.
-
Well, my plan is to attempt this today. But (as usual) the printer is out of ink and we can't find an ink cartridge for our printer anywhere... Out of stock everywhere.
It's a small inconvenience. But a dozen small inconveniences a day start to wear on your nerves... 'bout fed up with this Covid business.
Mike
-
Hang in there Mike. I'm happy to hear that you want to shoot the match. I'm in the same boat with my printer...out of ink, but I printed about a dozen copies at the first of the month, so I'm ready to go out again. It's - 5 C here with about a foot of snow and no wind.
-
Thanks Taylor. As I said earlier, the printer being out of ink for targets is the most minor of inconveniences. But with distance learning and homeschooling we need that printer for the little one.
I'm just getting tired of attempts to buy basic commodities turning into a grail quest.
Hang it all. I'm going to shoot. I'm going to try some patches lubed with NF oil and I plan on enjoying myself. LOL
Weather here is warmer than yours but not ideal. No snow anyway.
Mike
-
Minus 3 here in the woods today with rain, and 80 to 100 km / hr winds....not ideal shooting weather ;D Today is the last day of regular rifle season for deer , so it'll be a lot safer out in the woods now.
I'll be shooting some targets next week for certain !
-
That's great to hear, Bob. Taylor and I have to get out again.
-
What the heck, hadn't given the rifle her full cleaning since the weekend club match so I threw a shots through it today. Very pleased with the consistency, but dang glad the target isn't at 50 yards!! .40 cal, .395 ball, 50gr FFF, prelubed pillow ticking patches. Please note I used the hockey stick in honor of you Canadians. ;D May try it again tomorrow...
(https://i.ibb.co/Gx2C49f/DSC00586.jpg) (https://ibb.co/NVjWdrg)
-
Very nice ! Love the .40 :)
-
Very nice target David. I score it @ 82 points. Please give it another go...with that kind of consistency, the '10's should look after themselves. Nice rifle too.
-
Yes indeed, nice rifle, good target.
-
Credit me a DNQ ( did not qualify) for my second target. Pushed 2 of the first 5 shots out of the 9 so that was that for today. Tried painting the front site with whiteout hoping to see it better, works on many targets but certainly didn't for this busy set of circles!
-
That is trutly frustrating...I know all about it.
Just for the record, shoot as many targets as you wish or can. But post only four.
-
If I get to shoot this target Taylor, it'll be with my pattern F musket and 9 pieces of buckshot! I'll be done in no time and will likely score better than with the rifle! :-)
Just kidding, but I think what I wrote would be true...
-
I would like to see that Pukka. I bet it would hit 50%
-
Temps up just above freezing. I think Taylor and I will get out again, today.
Fingers & toes crossed.
-
Snowstorm hit at noon. We are supposed to get 20 cm . I'd shoot, but can't really see the target today :( Maybe tomorrow .
-
Getting ready for a Coues deer hunt. So I went out to verify zero on my suppository rifle. I figured this would be a good time to shoot this months target.
I went out in the high desert, so I could set out a target at 300 yards. After I was done with that I drove up to my backstop and set up 25 yards from my target stand. The wind was very light, and since I wasn't at the range I didn't expect any distractions.
So I shot my first two bulls and I could see my hits quite well. While I was reloading for my third shot. An elderly gentleman drove up beside me. He asked if he could function fire two rifles he had just bought. I told him to go ahead. He was shooting center fire rifles. The first one had a scope on it. When he brought out the second one it had open iron sights.
Since he seemed like a nice fellow I volunteered to put a single bull target on my stand for him. And I did. Well long story short we talked for a bit and it turns out he is 82 years old and is a modern gun stocker.
Needless to say I was quite distracted.
So here is my entry I shot at bull #4 twice, because I lost track of what I was doing. The last shot I just lost focus.
It is the only target I shot and I doubt that I will be able to shoot another before the month is over.
I did not want to sit this one out. I liked the target. I shot it with my .54 Hawken using .535 balls and 70 grains of 2f goex. Jo Anns Cotton drill #40, bear oil lube.
(https://i.ibb.co/Bgsvyy3/1122201216.jpg) (https://ibb.co/LCpBxxR)
Don't understand why sometimes the image host shows images differently than how they are in my picture library.
I posted the target withe logo on top. That is a staple tear by the logo, I tore it when I repositioned the target.
-
Went out today with Taylor. Wasn't too cold, but it was snowing and - well, I didn't do well.
Made some good shots, made some bad shots. ;D
.69, .682 ball .021" denim patch LHV lube
85gr. 2F GOEX
25 yds. standing unsupported

-
Tried today with a blackened front sight on the same rifle. Could see it much better against the target, but rushed way too many shots as it was getting late in the day. Will try another gun if I have time for the last target...

Thanks for these new submissions. I score them as follows: Alacran - 65. Daryl: another 64. Osprey: 47
For those following this thread, Justin leads so far with a respectable 84.
I gave Alacran credit for a 10 on his double hit target, because of his credible story and benevolence. There's no Lexus at the end of this match, and its all about sportsmanship, fame and glory.
-
Thanks Taylor that is generous of you, I gave myself a 55. There is no excuse for optic rectitis.
-
I managed to get out and shoot today. Lots of melt dripping on me ! We had a dump of snow, and then as usual around here, some freezing rain to top things off. I'm planning on getting out again before month's end.

Very nice target Bob, thanks for submitting it. It scores a 74... the misses are hard to recover from! For this particular event, I think that that is the most difficult aspect. It is difficult to get through 9 actual targets without having a catastrophe. And I find that after the first shot, the heat from my barrel obscures the target/sights and some shots are purely "hail Mary's".
This might be an opportunity to try wiping between shots, just to slow the shooting down.
-
Or just waiting a minute or five between shots.
-
But I thought it was a race to see who couldget their target finished first.
-
Between Thanksgiving and deer season starting Saturday, doubt I'll get another target in. Happy with what I shot - an 82 for my best is decent and if I shot any better I may do something stupid like win the match and have to run the next one. ;)
-
But I thought it was a race to see who couldget their target finished first.
That's the way we shot last time out. Didn't take but 3 shots and the bullseyes were jumping away from the sights.
-
Just two days left for this month's game, lads and ladies.
-
Well, we got out again & my last 2 targets didn't make the grade.
The top target I score as an 82 with eight 9's and one 10, bottom target has 2 misses, so I score it
as a 65 with two 10's, 1/2 ball rule, of course.
Load was 82gr. 3F GOEX as my 2f horn was about empty as I as loading up, so grabbed the 3F horn.
10 ounce denim and LHV lube with .682" pure lead ball.
The bottom target was with the same patches and ball size, but slighlty hardened balls and spit patch.
Same load.

-
The weather hasn't exactly cooperated, with rain forecast for tomorrow, but I still will try and get at least one more target done in the morning.
-
Yesterday, when Daryl and I shot our last targets for this month, I used my T. Allison inspired .25 cal rifle.
(https://i.ibb.co/x6rgxxc/image.jpg) (https://ibb.co/SBZmFF1)
I made some nice shots (4 10's) but also some really poor ones - (2 misses), so scored 67.
Today's the last day for this month's frolic, so git er done today, or live with regret all winter my friends.
-
Too many things going on to get the target shot this month. I printed them off at the beginning of the month but with hunting season, new baby and bad weather i just didn't get to them. Hopefully i'll have better luck and more time for next month's.(not sure how the time thing will work with an infant)
-
I apologize for not getting more targets completed. Good intentions were thwarted by horrific windy, rainy weather. There was a time when I would have gone and shot the targets regardless, but I admit age / wisdom have taken hold ! :) I don't mind cold, but cold and extremely wet with wind sends me to shelter !
I'm planning on getting out sooner this coming month. Not as many "must do's " once winter actually arrives .
-
I to apologize as I intended to get it shot before I left for elk hunting on the other side of the state. Just got home today and realized today was the last day. Oh well I will just have to get after the December target when it is posted.
"Muskrat" Mike over and out!
-
Well, as they say on Forged in Fire -this round --- IS OVER! And the winner of the November Covid Postal Shoot, is Justin Urbantas, with a very respectable score of 84/90. He will receive the folding knife prize, and will be responsible for sponsoring the December match. I want to thank everyone who braved the snow, wind and cold and submitted targets. Oh, that's just what we Canucks dealt with. Most of you Americans had 70 deg. sunshine, T shirt and runner weather. Justin likely already has something funky in mind. Nicely done, my friend.
Daryl and Osprey both posted close second place targets of 82/90 - but there can be only one (first)!
-
Thanks Taylor, and congratulations Justin :) I'm really looking forward to the Dec match.
-
Thanks Taylor. That was a good shoot. I'm working on coming up with a Christmas themed shoot for this month. I'll post it tonight or tomorrow.

Well it did snow on my the last day, this far South, but we had plenty of fair days. I hope to shoot in some of these, but last month wasn't the month for me. Thanks to all participating and making these happen.
It's fun to watch even if all we see is targets and excuses. :P
-
LOL Wade. Well said. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
