Well I got the Vogler project delivered and made it back home safe and sound. It’s now time to get the next project started. It will be a 58 cal. FCI barrel that Charlie made for me. The lock is one of Jim Chambers and all the other fittings including the stock came from Ron Scott. This will be a rather plain Jaeger with little carving but the great stock blank I got from Ron should should make up for that.
Let’s get started.

I'm glad you're inletting those parts and not me!
-
Just a bit of sanding and you're done!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Have fun.
-
THAT is a nice plank!!!
-
That wood doesn't need any carving to set it off. Great piece ought to make that brass pop too!
george
-
Mike I may have to take a shot or two of some Alabama Stump Water to settle my nerves before I start on that butt plate! :o
-
Just treat it like hot shoeing Bama!
Bonny blank, that's for sure.
-
Jim, I have much the same pieces from Ron - top notch castings, for sure. And the wood that he has is almost unbelievable. A gent with your talents can really do justice to the whole thing.
I have been touching up and polishing the brass, etc. Using a different lock. As I did not have a bandsaw (nor a hand saw!), the wood has gone to Dave Keck for profiling, inletting the swamped .62 cal barrel, also from Charlie/FCI, and drilling the RR. Hope to get it back soon tho, so I can tackle that awesome BP.
-
Craig,
I should send you a hand-saw. :-)
-
Gorgeous piece of wood and so big you have enough cut off to make a pistol stock or two! Almost another halfstock.
-
Craig,
I should send you a hand-saw. :-)
I did get a small one, Richard, and a small bandsaw - AFTER sending the wood and barrel to Dave Keck. Going broke replacing all my tools.
I've been thinking of sending a bottle of Oxpho cold blue to that fellow in Canada that's wanting some. I can understand why the parts houses don't want to send stuff to Canada - puts them into a different bracket for taxes, duties, and tariff's. Also something about international arms dealers comes into play, I think.
-
Ron has some beautiful blanks. Looking forward to following you build.
Cheers Richard
-
Been almost a week, got her done yet? ;D
-
I'd like to see how you do on it. I have those same casting from Ron, waiting on the day I feel like punishing myself with tedious inletting.
-
I am back on the Jaeger project. I didn’t get to work on it over the Christmas and New Year holidays but I have gotten in a few days last week and this week. I am shutting down again until next week because I will be setting things up for my show happening later this week. Here are a few progress pictures.

Hopefully, this won't have too long of a pull. I see many modern recreations that look very odd with pulls in the range of 13.75 or 14". I'm no student of jaegers, but it seems to my eye originals were typically considerably shorter. Looks like it will be a great project.
Jim
-
With a fairly straight stock, a shorter "pull" is certainly doable. 13 1/2" for me, shorter yet is doable,
as the butt is comfortably positioned on the pecs muscle. Just by tightening up that muscle moves the
butt out 1" from relaxed.
-
Thanks for the comments Jim and Daryl. I have not set the length of pull yet but I normally set it around 13 1/2" to 13 3/4". I usually do not set the LOP until I get the triggers installed.
-
Bama, Jim and Daryl,
I found with this type of rifle, getting it to look right is a challenge if we try and stretch out the butt-stock for a 'normal' modern pull.
You put my thoughts into words, Jim!
The relationship between the rear of the trigger guard, and the nose of the comb is V important. If we try for a longer pull, we need a longer wrist to balance it, and then this doesn't line up right with the trigger-guard extension.
Not wanting to put negative stuff in your head, Bama, but this takes a bit of sorting, More so than on most rifles.
Actually, if we Hold these rifles as they were at the time, head back and left elbow on hip-chest, (Like a cheek-stocked wheellock , but with a shoulder -stock)
the short -stock they were made with fits very well. Front hand near the lock when aiming.
If we try to crawl up these stocks, they are Way too short!
Hope I didn't confuse the issue, but I know a long time can be spent getting this to Look right and handle right!
Bama,
You're doing a very fine job!!
-
Not having built but two of these with this being the second one :o I am far from an expert. My plan was to set the butt plate at the distance required to use the full height of the butt plate. I will try to figure what that distance is when I get back from the show.
-
Jim, I have some of Ron's wood for knife handles. I really like the way it works, and the grain is awesome.
I have some photos of my original Jaeger that I would be happy to send you by email if you would like to see them. Several are of the rifle apart that you do not get to see often.
-
Thanks Heinz I would love to have copies of your pictures of your rifle please email then to me.
-
bama,
Newby question: what did you cut the ram rod channel with?
-
Taco I stabbed in the sides with a single bevel 1/2” flat chisel, then I used a gouge to remove most of the wood to make the grove and finished up with a round nosed ram rod plane. I will use a lollipop scraper to finish it smooth as a final step.
-
Just a little more progress on the Jaeger. I got the tang installed and inlet the lock, trimmed up the forestock. Next I am going to build the triggers from Ron’s castings and get those installed.

Looking good, Mr Parker.....!
Bob

I got the triggers assembled and functional. They need a little more tuning but I will do that after I install them and see how they work.

-
That Juglans Regia will be an especially nice stock on that Jaeger, bama.
-
Very nice inletting...looks like you are well underway to having a great looking rifle.
Richard
-
Daryl you got me buddy, I had to look that up to make sure you were talking about my stock. ;D This the second piece of European Walnut from Ron Scott that I have used and I can say I love working with it. It carves great and seems to have a natural oil that helps with the finishing process. The dust does not affect my breathing like Black Walnut and it does not turn my hands purple. Great wood.
-
Love the grain on the stock and you're doing a great job overall. Ill be following this build.
-
My apologies for not updating this thread lately but I have had some delays in the building process. Hopefully I can get this project finished in the next few weeks. I have inlet the butt plate and it was indeed a challenge. I use a combination of the square shaped butt at the start and then rounded the comb as I went down. It’s not perfect but it will do.

Oh WOW- what an inletting job, now I understand what "Mikey" was talking about.
Well done.
-
I think this is going to be a DANDY rifle!
-
I'm glad you're inletting those parts and not me!
About 60 years ago a local gun stocker gave me a piece of walnut similar to this.
I did get a nice looking Mew York style half stock out of it but I would not even
think about trying it today.Razor sharp tools and the patience of a the Statue of Liberty
are mandatory.Good luck with this project.
Bob Roller
-
Bob this Walnut blank came from Ron Scott and I think that he told me that it was Arminian Walnut. All I know is it is very dense, works and carves beautifully and makes me never want to use Black Walnut again. I am trying very hard not to mess it up. :o
-
First class job of inletting!
Cheers Richard
-
I made a little more progress on the Jaeger project. I have the butt stock shaped and the side plate, trigger guard, triggers are inlet. Now to inlet the thumb piece and tackle the patch box. This will be my first metal covered wooden patch box. Got to go slow here, there is no room for error. :-\

Oh NICE!!
-
Looking very nice Jim. I have some small pieces of Ron Scott's Armenian Walnut I have been using on knife handles. I really like working with it. And that is one beautiful stock you have there.
-
Jim, that’s certainly a gorgeous piece of lumber, and you are doing it justice! I’m like you in preference for good, hard English walnut for gunstocking...but I’ve done so many in black walnut that we’ve come to terms with each other...
Please keep us updated on this piece!
Greg!
-
Great looking work. Looks like quite the dance to blend the wooo into the comb were the tang of the butt plate is without removing the Engraving. What is the LOP?
Richard
-
flatsguide, the LOP is going to be right at 13". The return on the butt plate was quite the challenge and one I don't wish to repeat anytime soon. The rest of the furniture is also challenging but nothing compared to the butt plate.
-
Great looking work. Looks like quite the dance to blend the wooo into the comb were the tang of the butt plate is without removing the Engraving. What is the LOP?
Richard
"blend the wooo into the comb"....Not sure if that is a typo or not, but it works either way.
-
Woo Hoo!
-
Jim, I am also building a Jaeger from Ron Scott's parts and wood. Right now, gradually getting the front half down to size. Barrel is in, and RR hole has been drilled. LOTS of walnut curls from my planes! I need to put it through my bandsaw, but am reluctant to do that. I ain't the best band sawyer, fer shure!
But, you are giving me inspiration to keep going, and I appreciate that. That Armenian walnut is absolutely great to work with.
-
I got started on the wood/metal patch box lid today. I am making this a two piece lid and will glue the two halves together. I got the bottom half made today and got the dovetails fit up on the lid and the butt plate. I also got the cavity dovetails cut. All in all not a bad days work.

It's amazing what you are doing. Beautiful work :)
-
I got the patch box lid completed and the catch spring made. I am not sure how the wood was attached to the brass cover but was probably held in place by a screw. I cheated and used some PC glue (epoxy) ::). I will probably get tons of hate mail over that one but she’s locked in so it is what it is. The catch spring works great and it is tight, no wobble. Now I have to clean it up and re-cut some of the engraving that got filed away and it will be done.

I hope to see this one in a couple of weeks
-
Brother Jim, it’s going to make someone mighty happy to hang that one on his wall..!
As usual great work.
Bob
-
Hi Jim, This particular butt trap used to machine crews threaded into the bosses on the underside of the lid. The approximate size of the thread is 8/32, with a head diameter of 7/16 inch. You get a salute for the installation of the fancy butt plate. Each one hereafter will get more familiar.
-
Thanks for the encouragement Ron. I figured that was what the bosses were for and that is why I left the front one exposed so I could come back and put a screw in it. I couldn't figure out to use the back boss and install the catch spring. I thought about combining the catch spring screw and the keeper screw into one screw but I forgot to locate the boss before I covered it up with the bottom portion of the lid. Next time I will do it right.
Thanks again for the great wood and castings.
-
Your skill, patience and talent are showing Jim. Fine craftsmanship. God bless, Marc
-
Well boys this Jaeger project has been about to get the best of me but I think I am on the down hill slide now. I got the forestock shaped up the pipes installed and got the horn nose cap applied. Just a little more scraping and this baby will be ready for a little craving and a cheek inlay.

Coming along beautifully, Jim. Very impressive.
-
Mr Jim, she’s going to make someone a right fine hog rifle. Looking good sir.!!!!👍
Bob
-
Amazing work, superb in letting, and how does one make horn forestock caps? That’s really beautiful work!
-
Jim, that is looking really nice. At first, when I looked at the photos I thought those fuzzy pads were walnut shavings :-). You must have swept the shavings up.
-
RLM, heating the horn material in hot oil will enable you to bend it.
Nice black horn pieces are available at per shops - sold as dog chews.
-
The horn that I used for this build is a solid piece of Water Buffalo horn. There are several suppliers of horn on the internet so it is not hard to find. Many offer it in rounds but I wanted a piece that was a solid ruff piece of horn from the base of the horn. The base of the horn is usually solid, sometimes up toward the tip it will have a hollow section in it. I cut the octagon portion to match the barrel on my milling machine, but you could saw cut it and chisel it to fit the barrel. I then drilled two holes into the end of the stock and epoxied to number 6 machine screws into the holes. I drilled two holes to match in the horn and epoxied the nose cap to the two machine screws and the stock. I did this with the barrel in place which help keep everything lined up, I shaped the outside of the nose cap once everything set up. I used the milling machine to cut the ram rod grove in the nose cap and rasp the outside to shape. I have to do the final shaping and polishing. Buffalo horn machines very nicely and reminds me almost of plastic in its consistency. I am not sure how the originals were attached, probably not the way I did but this worked and seems to be solid so I am happy.
-
Heinz, I try to crop the pictures close enough that you don't see that much of my messy bench! ::) ;D
-
It's been over two weeks, we need an update!!! :D
-
I am putting the finishing touches on the rifle right now. This has been quite a challenging build and I think it has turned out pretty well. Will post pictures for sure.
-
Can't wait to see the finished gun.

Good Easter morning to all my friends and fellow builders. This has been a challenging build and I am happy to say I that think it turned out OK. I would like to say thanks again to Ron Scott for a great stock blank and furniture castings. Charlie Burton of FCI barrels made the 31” 58 caliber barrel. Thanks for following the build and all the kind words and help. Thanks Hienz for sending me your pictures, they were a big help.
I wish you all a blessed Easter.

Well done! Thanks for showing it.
-
Jim you do very sharp work no matter the style you happen to be working on.
-
Happy Easter. A fine example of the Jaeger by a first class contemporary maker.
-
Mr. Parker; Sir, I cannot begin to imagine the fulfilling satisfaction you must feel when you step back and look upon the ART
-
Really nice work Jim...turned out fine!
-
Outstanding work, Jim. You do a great job on anything you build for sure.

"OUT OF THE PARK" - lovely!
-
Beautiful Jim! Now when I screw up my jaeger build I know who to bring it to ;D
I hope you and Celeste are blessed, and enjoying a beautiful Easter.

You have done a great job. The butt inlet, box lid, muzzle cap... were done with great skill you should be very pleased. When someone with a critical eye a hundred years from now looks over it they are going to say, "the fellow who made this cared". Most Excellent, Hank
-
Beautiful! Great job, Jim.
-
Looks really great, Jim. So, now that you have all that practice on that one, I will let you finish mine for me. The parts are pretty much all the same as yours, except that I have cleaned up and polished all the cast brass pieces. Maybe you can get it done in 2-3 days. I'll furnish all the food and coffee.
-
It came out really nice.
-
Nice Jim!! You pushed your envelope and the result is excellent.

I've enjoyed this one as I've got a set of Jeager parts waiting for my attention. But now I'm trying to decide if watching this has encouraged me or scared me even more. :o
-
Absolutely TOP NOTCH BEAUTIFUL Jaeger! A lot of really nice details from stem to stern! And the WOOD.....!
-
Thanks everyone for the kind words. I had fun building this but I am ready to take a break and get back to my beloved Kentucky rifles . Next in the line up is a Isaac Haines style rifle in 32 caliber. This will be a challenge to get the architecture right but I have a nice swamped by FCI barrels so I think I will be able to pull it off. Now I get to get the shipping box made to send the Jaeger off to it's new home.
-
Great work Jim. That customer is going to be really happy.
-
Nice looking Jaeger, Jim! What did you do / use, finishing wise? Best,
Ed
-
Ed I mix up the finish that I use on my guns. It’s a 50/50 mix of boiled linseed oil and amber colored shellac with some natural burnt umber pigment mixed in. I rub it in by hand in very thin coats.
-
Great job Jim. Thanks for posting your build.
-
Thanks, Jim. Very nice look! Best,
Ed
-
Congratulations on an awesome job! That rifle looks just monumental !!
-
Great work Jim.
Now what?
Ya gonna keep raising the bar? :D

If I tried to build something like that, I would have to go to the Bar.....!🥃🥃🥃
