Title: Flintlock pan primer
Post by: Egonz on January 06, 2021, 11:53:36 PM
Has anyone ever made a pan primer or a powder flask other than a cow horn?
Can you post or send me a picture

I had a couple of thick, wide, and flat brow tines from whitetail antlers that I hollowed out and plugged. Left one I'm finishing for my son's hunting bag, right one is the one I've been carrying in my hunting bag for 20 years.

There are brass priming devices for sale at track, etc, but some have likened them to hand grenades.
I now use only my horn primers, and use the 'hand grenades' for priming storage for in the shooting box.

I made one out of Cane. Bamboo actually. A wood plug with a horn plug/vent pick. Pictures are fairly self explanatory.

I did not make this one  It was a gift from a forum friend; he made it from a piece of deer leg bone.

Hanshi I've never seen a leg bone into a primer! That's pretty cool!

A while back we had a discussion about primers  (http://americanlongrifles.org/forum/index.php?topic=24135.0) and I posted a couple that I had made several years ago out of a .30 and .50 cal brass cases.  Here they are again:

(https://preview.ibb.co/g2H6gc/Primers_3.jpg) (http://ibb.co/cRE8ux)

About the same time I was posting those, Dennis Glazener was sending me a PM about a friend who had recently blown off part of his hand with a primer much like the one I had made out of the .50 cal case when it accidently caught a spark.  I thanked Dennis for the heads up and told him I was working on a primer that had a "blow out" safety feature.  Well, here it is.  It uses a modified plunger tube on the business end, but the rear end of the reservoir tube is not closed with metal.  The end is plugged with a thin leather disk sealed and water proofed with a drop of varnish.  It only takes a few psi to blow out the leather disk, so, if this one were to catch a spark, you might get burned, but the tube will not explode and there won't be any shrapnel.  (You could do the same thing with a little cork in a plain tube.)

Perhaps a little overkill, but then I had some time, some brass, an idea....and I like to keep all my digits in place.

By the by, while I was digging around looking for the brass, I found a powder measure I made when I was 10 for my first powder horn.  Not at all safe, but not bad for 10.

Dave that primer with the leather relief plug is gorgeous. Phenomenal work.

And I know we aren't supposed to discuss modern stuff... But out of curiosity what .30 chambering is that primer... -06?

That spiral one is spectacular Dave.  I'd expect nothing less from you.  I have two of the standard little commercial brass plunger primers that I use.  Why two?  I seem to run out of prime, so I always have the backup.  I think I am going to take out the screw-in brass finials and put corks in them.  A good idea you have there.

I have noticed that once I fill the pan, those primers will still dribble a little priming powder.  I long ago decided to shake the primer downward after priming the pan to make sure no powder piles up on me.  I don't think those brass commercial primers are the best design and construction in the world.

Did you use a commercial valve at the end of your spiral brass one?  Knowing you, you created a better mousetrap made to super standards.   :-)

Best wishes, and God Bless,   Marc

Thanks for the kind words....

Marc.....no, for once I left well enough alone and just used one of the commercially available plunger priming valves.  It works OK....not very HC, but then again I drive in my Ford Expedition to get to where I shoot..... ;)

Skillman - I like it!  What material did you use for the collar on the bamboo?

Just received my brass & copper one from Jerry Rice (just like the one shown by Bob McBride). Nice prime & will look fine with my Gillespie rifle.

wmrike. I used linen thread wrapped around the cane. I saturated it with thin ACC. The plug is a hardwood that my daughter gave me a small piece of The plug is horn. Hope that helps.

One of the antler primers I use, and not hard to make;

Here's another if you prefer to carry it over your shoulder with your horn;
