Title: R. Sells longrifle?
Post by: Organick on February 02, 2021, 10:14:28 AM
Hello I'm new here,, my parents have a rifle with what looks like R.sells on the lock. The picture isn't the best quality but I was wondering if anyone knew anything about it.

We have a R Sells on this forum but I don't think her made your gun. Roger, How old are you??? These late percussion guns usually were built with purchased parts. The name on the lock is usually the lock maker and the gun builder would put his name on the top flat of the barrel between the rear sight and the breech....Ed

Hello Nick,

Welcome to the forum.  Longknife is spot-on in that the name on the lock is probably the maker of the lock and not the complete rifle.

Are those initials and a last name engraved on the inlay on the cheekpiece?  If so, that might be helpful.  If it is and it's a family ancestor name the place or places where they lived might provide a hint.
