Smart dog, I love the checkering on your previous favorite. Actually, let me amend that, I love everything about that rifle.
-
Hi Donal,
Thanks. I really like that rifle too and the bonus is the barrel has a slight choke or taper to the bore. I did not realize that until I put ball and patch down it. I bought it from Chris Laubach and I don't know if he ordered the taper or what? It is just a Colerain D weight Griffin rifled barrel. I've never knowingly owned a rifled barrel with a tapered bore and I've never owned a barrel for which developing a good load was easier. It is the most forgiving barrel I've ever used and it is very accurate. I use a 0.595 ball with 0.018" patches, which loads nice and easy and with 85 grains of powder will shoot 1.5" groups at 50 yards. However, powder charges ranging as low as 75 grains and as high as 95 made no difference at that range so I selected 85 because it was right in the middle. The lock is one I built up from TRS parts. It is a copy of a lock by John Twigg. I am not sure it is a particularly fast lock but it always ignites the primer. I've shot the rifle quite a bit now and have not had a single misfire or hang fire even with very worn flints and fouling build up. On our last wood walk in 2020, I shot the head off a bowling pin at 120 yards with it. I really like the rifle a lot.

I found the chair in a trash pile. A friend of mine did the bottom. The 48” barrel I bought from a tailgate vendor for $12 on the side of the road. It was a 1970’s built barrel that had never had a touch hole drilled. I saw the rifling machine it was cut on recently. It was made by Boyd Henry in Buchannon, WV. I was going to shorten it but couldn’t bring myself to do it. I decided I’d wait till it was worked out and needed re-breached or re-cut at muzzle and shorten it then.
-
David Rase, that is a fine looking gun you made. Looks like it'd be an enjoyable shooter.
BTW, I saw the quote from Charlie Daniels in your signature. Charlie grew up about a mile from where I grew up. He was older than me, and later moved across the river, but we were all mighty proud of him. Sad we lost him recently.
God Bless, Marc

One of Ron Ehlert’s first iron mount rifles. Bugged me to let him make me a rifle (early in his gun making). I told him I wanted a SW Virginia, iron mount. This is what I got. My go to rifle.
38” barrel, .40 cal.

While the Ehlert rifle is my go to, this is what I find myself shooting the most lately. Made by Ric Lambert in the style of Thomas Simpson. A middle Cumberland style. Ric does a fantastic job. Now I need to find a horn so I can match the one Simpson made for Mansker to go with the rifle he made him.

Mel Hankla owns the original rifle and horn. He sent me photos of it so I could copy it. He often has it at some of the longrifle shows.

This is Miss Sally. She has a .50 caliber, forty-four inch Colerain Barrel, a Chambers Late Ketland Lock, and a nice piece of Red Maple. The triggers are from a Davis kit ( I now make my own set triggers). She was built from a blank, and has a scraped and burnished finish on the wood. All other metal parts are hand made by myself, except for screws, bolts, and the vent liner. Both the trigger guard and butt plate are made from two pieces of soft iron; rivited, then forge-brazed with copper. She's light, slim, and a joy to shoot. She has also put deer meat in the freezer.

Guys,
This Lehigh was made without using any 20th c tools, 18th c tools only (except for my electric shop lights!) It is all original wrought iron except for the three lock springs.

It's taken a long time and a lot of effort, as most of you know, to put these together. I chased one pistol for 7 years. It's been a fun ride and I'm not quitting yet.

Pistol don’t do much for me, now your rifle collection and how you display them,.......wow

Yes Daryl it had a record book skull, tied one taken by Tom Castor I think from this forum. Bear weighed 340 lbs, was 6'2" nose to tail after I got hide back from tannery. Gun was a 58 flinter with left over parts shooting 110 gr. Swiss 1&1/2 Swiss and a 570 ball. I got lucky with this first Flintlock Bear

I've been using my Cornell Kemper .45 as my "go to" rifle for accurate shooting, but I think I may drag out my Mike Brooks NC-inspired rifle to the NC State Muzzleloader shoot this September. The trigger is so light once set, I really only have to think about firing to set it off.

Nothing fancy. Just a 42 in C weight swamped Colerain .54 barrel in a "Virginia" precarve stock from Pecatonica , and a Chambers Siler lock. It's taken a beating over the last 22 years, but has put a lot of meat in my freezer.

New to the site so thought I'd say hi in this post and show a few of my Jim Fahling Sr rifles that I'm pretty proud of but I'm biased, he's my dad.
Theres a Beck in .54 cal and a Schroyer in .50.
Lots of great rifles on here and looking forward to seeing a few more...

Not a particularly good photo but it does show everything I have that uses a flint. Three others are percussion and not shown. While not as many as I would like they're still more than I'll ever need. I no longer hunt so they don't get the exercise they used to; but it just feels good to have them around.

Any Mongrel rifles in that bunch?

Hanshi the 4 th one down is a looker. I’d like hear more about it and see some more photos. You have a very nice group of flintlocks.
