Title: Bag #37 - Gentleman's Haversack
Post by: Marcruger on February 21, 2021, 06:37:48 PM
Hello Folks,

Just finished up a gentleman's haversack that I have been wanting to make for a while.  Tooling cowhide, tweed cloth, lined in pigskin suede for body in the cloth areas.  Stiffener at top inside back.  Flap lined in bridle leather.  Top rolled edge is goatskin.  Waxed linen thread all hand stitched.  It seemed like miles of stitching when underway.  This is my first attempt at hand stitching cloth.  13" tall by 11-1/2" wide.  Figuring out what needed to be done when was sort of like playing chess.....thinking ahead four or five moves.

I saw an interpreter at the Governor's Mansion in Williamsburg probably 4 years ago now.  He was wearing a haversack that (in my mind) looks like this one.  Tan tweed, russet leather.  I asked where he got it, and he said he made it. I asked what he used it for, and he said a book and his sandwich for lunch.   :)  Greg Pennell got me going last month when he showed his good looking reworked haversack.  It's been a fun project, but not one I want to do again any time soon.  I plan to use it for the CLA show, Fort Frederick, etc.  Should hold more "plunder" than a hunting pouch.

God Bless,   Marc

Love the leather dye you used and is that a Lanni buckle?

Hi Marc,

A gentleman's Bag indeed!

Right now I'm feeling like a dirty rotten scoundrel. My haversack has holes in it.

Very nice work.

Thanks for sharing.

Regards,

Doug

Smart looking bag Marc. Your frustration was worth it, I quite like. Great buckle choice.

My, oh my...that is NICE!  I love everything about it!  That’s some super nice material you found to make the body from, and all your leather details are just over the top!

Now you’ve gone and done it...I’m going to have to make another one...

Greg

Marc,
That haversack is beautiful but I don't have a suit that would do it justice. ;D Absolutely top of the mark.

Thank you for the nice thoughts gents.  I rarely keep anything I make, but I plan to keep and use this one.

Wayne, I will keep you in mind brother if I get insane enough to make another.   ;-)   My fingers still hurt from this sewing project.

"Now you have to show us what a "Gentle Man" would carry in such a beautiful haversack."  I think the easy answer would be whatever he'd need for a nice stroll or ride in the countryside.  A pipe, tobacco, compass, dry socks, a bit of line, a book.   That sort of thing.  I personally think it'd be much better with a bag of Peanut M&Ms and a copy of Muzzleloader magazine.

Gary, yes indeed the buckles are Richard Lanni creations with antiquing done by me.  Richard does lovely work.

God Bless, and thank you again,   Marc

Marc,
You’re like most gun makers. Can’t remember the aches and pains of the project  a week after it’s finished so why not jump right into another. We haven’t seen the best of your talents yet (lucky for us)..

That is really nifty and great workmanship. The choice of buckle puts the finishing touch on it.
Cheers Richard

Wow Marc....That is one of the nicest haversacks I have seen. Really nice detail and very much a bag suited for a Gentleman! With that leather bottom you won't be wearing that out anytime soon. The contrast of the fabric with the leather is a really nice touch. That shade of russet brown looks very much like the sheath you just made me! Regards, Bill

If I brought home something that nice, my wife would surely think it was for her.

The more I look at this haversack, the more I want one just like it. Everything about it is "Just Right ". I can only echo what many others have posted about it. It looks fantastic.
