This rifle started out with a 48 3/4"54 caliber Bobby Hoyt wrought iron barrel that I purchased about three years ago and dropped off to Allen Martin at Dixon's that year. Allen then reworked one of Chris Laughbaugh's locks and worked his magic to come up with this awesome rifle that I picked up today. Thank You Allen for a great rifle!

Wow, that rifle is comfort food, you can't ever have a bad day coming home to her!

This Newcomer has always been a favorite of move. Very nicely done!
-
And I had mop and bucket duty cleaning up all the slobber we all left behind. Great visit with Allen and watching John light up with this beauty. And of course, all the other man stories and ribbing was good to🤣

That is a beauty. Dang.

Allen Martin is a great man and one of the very finest builders of our time. I have a Schimmel on order from him and am super excited!
-
That is a very nice rifle I know Allen now 11 years saw a lot of his work and had the pleasure to be with him and his wonderful family several times ! Allen has the right instinct and talent to make a rifle look like it was back then. Have fun with that very nice rifle.

I don't know. But if he keeps on practicing he may make a fair gunmaker one day.

Now, I just need to get out to the range and try her out. If it shoots half as good as it looks, I will be set. This rifle exceeded all of my expectations and I am happy to have it. I planted the seed for another project and left another wrought iron barrel with Allen when I picked this one one up.

I’ve got one of Al’s Newcomers. Yours is perfect. Very workmanlike and believable. I’m green with envy.

I ordered mine a couple of years ago at Dixon's and was eagerly waiting for it to begin. When the photos of yours were posted on here, I got really excited anticipating how mine was going to look.

Stunning. Like a fine wine, aged to perfection.
-
Now that is an elegant rifle. A really nice, pleasant rifle, indeed.

I don't know, but I have heard that if you can get him to stop talking, he does build a pretty nice rifle. ;D

One of those little details: the index mark in the front lock bolt, in case you've overlooked it.
It's there to mark the position the 'notched' front bolt must be in for the end of the tapered ramrod to slip underneath it.
Too much wood is the bane of the longrifle profile and this longrifle isn't carrying any extra wood, anywhere along its length.
I'm a early fan of the John Newcomer profile. Many of these early Lancaster gunsmiths should be looked at more closely. There's a lot there to like.
A rifle, like this one, that the owner and builder are both proud of, is the reward for patience and trust.

Yes sir that thar rifle is a keeper. Very well done Allen.
-
What a beautiful gun with fine architecture. The carving is a pleasant "extra" on that one. God Bless, Marc

Not anything left to say about that rifle, she is a keeper!
