This one has features of an original horn in my collection and a paneled to round, scalloped transition original I didn’t get at an auction. Both horns are considered to be of New England origin. This one probably holds just short of a pound of powder. 15” along the curve and 3” wide at the butt plug.

The “story” on the faces in the letters is that this soldier started out marching happily on two legs. By the end of the war, one leg and a more stern outlook.

That is a very nice looking horn.
-
I like it. Many years from now, someone will wonder about the expressions on those faces.
-
Very cool. Was the scrimshaw (initials with faces, arrows, etc.) inspired by the originals as well as the shape / style?
-
Nice job Rich, I like how the panels go into the scallops. The carving reminds me of the faces on playing cards.

I confess that I do a lot of work in the moment. I just get after it like some guy in the field who thinks it’s time to put his initials on his horn.
Some horns were fully scrimmed, by plan, often by a professional. Others seem more willy nilly, scrimmed all over but without a design plan or professional execution. Some have initials on them and not much else. These are purported to be horns used by militia. One person from a mess or under one sergeant would take all horns to be re-filled. The initials removed confusion and prevented someone taking a better looking horn as their own when horns were returned. These were done by the owner, in a less professional manner. This “fella” likely saw some professionally decorated horns and thought to do a little more than the simplest initials. But, done at an idle time, in the lap, with a pocketknife. Facial expressions likely added later. This will be one of my personal horns and so may get later additions.
This horn is based on this original and another.

Nice horn. I like the scalloped transition. Looks great.

I think Paul Bigham hinted to me that it could use some aging. Might stick it in a pot of murky water. What say ye?
-
Maybe a bath in some strong instant coffee. TC

Might give that a try. In the past it’s been onion skins, tea, or Osage orange shavings.

Rich...you’ve made yourself a very nice personal horn. It’s got the cool factor ! If you age it any please give us a updated pic. Thanks for sharing.
-
Rich I got to ask. Is the horn two pieces..? Yeah my 👀 need work but it looks like it to me.
Nice work all the same.

One piece! Following Tim Crosby’s advice I boiled it to soften then cut in the scallops. I tried s gouge but my trusty v chisel was the ticket. Took several heatings to get it done.

Got a figure that's how it went down originally... bunch of soldiers sitting around the campfire with their knives and time on their hands. Rather than imitate what they created in a literal sense, recreate the spirit in which they did it. Pretty cool.

It came out a little uneven but the color is right compared with originals I own. Guess I should have fresh scraped the whole thing first. It’ll do for grungy.
