Title: starting powder charge
Post by: rnb1969 on June 22, 2021, 11:52:15 PM
I just finished building a 54 caliber flintlock pistol with a 12 inch barrel. Now I am looking for suggestions for a starting load. I will shoot a 530 diameter round ball the same as I use in my rifle. Any help will be appreciated.

Fast twist barrel? I’d start with 40 grains of FFG and go up till accuracy stops getting better or the recoil becomes distracting. Somewhere in the 40-60 grains range should do well.

  Start with 25-30 grains of 2 or 3 F.

ditto - although this most certainly depends on the ROTwist.
My .54 with 60" twists needs 55gr. 3F to shoot well to 50yards.
