Title: Building a Maryland Rifle

   I started the next project. This one is a Maryland rifle. I am doing another video series. Just posted the first one on Rumble. So far I have the the first 12 videos finished. All of those are on Patreon now. I am posting them on Patreon as soon as they are finished and posting one on Rumble every weekend. I am following the same format as I have on my other videos. I am trying to go into more detail on the basic stuff than I have in the past. Most of the people that watch my videos are first time gun builders or interested in giving it a try. Many don't have a lot of experience working with tools. There are so many that would like to build guns but never do because they assume it is beyond what they are capable of. They give up before they even take the first step. The idea is to get those guys to realize that building a gun is something they can actually do and to help them out along the way.

   Its almost time to start those winter projects. Hopefully this will inspire a few of you take that big leap and start building. The first video is just an introduction to what the project will be and show the parts I will be using. Next weekend I will be posting the video where the work starts.

It's a nice gun.
Maybe you like the crisp lines on the butt stock.

I have been enjoying your video's. The tool's episode was interesting not trying to tell you what you should do but I would be interested in how you sharpen your chisels and gouges I am sure others who follow you would too.

   There are lots of videos out there showing all different ways to sharpen chisels. I just don't see how I would have much to add to to it.

Hi Bill,
My suggestion wasn't to add to the sharpening video's but to see how you sharpen for the way you build your rifles. I know for me it took a lot of trial and error to learn to sharpen and I use primarily a Tormek system but still use oil stones and diamond stones too.

Bill, I have a Rice Southern Mountain rifle barrel that was fitted with the same breech plug as the one you modified in part 8. My question is this, can I buy a plug with a long tang and shape it to the “lollipop” profile or would it be wiser to purchase one that’s already formed to that shape? Of course I understand that I must match the thread size and fit the plug properly.

   If you like the tang that is available, go with that. If you want something different, then forming one from a long tang will work just fine also. Nothing hard about changing shape of the tang. It all just comes down to how you want it to look in the end.

Bill, enjoying the series and I have a question since I’m getting close to where I need to polish all my metal fixtures. Where can I find a slotted bit like the one you use with the Foredom tool? I recently got one but haven’t rounded up much for bits and such. I like the way you’re able to get in the tight spots with the emery cloth. Thanks for doing what you do!

I had all of those videos backed up on an external hard drive. Then I moved last year. That external hard drive vanished somewhere in the move. I know it is here in the house somewhere, but not sure where. It will turn up eventually. I will post all of it when it does.

Hi Bill,

Is the punch you use to move metal in your latest video something you made, or is it something that can be purchased? I’ve not seen one with a rectangular shaped end before.

Hi Bill,
Watching part 79. Possible a stupid question, but how do you hold onto that rear sight when filing and polishing and getting rid of the casting gate? Trying to file the gate off while holding it by hand is doable, but it can be a pain. And the shape of the part makes me worried that a vise might hurt the shape of the dovetail.

   I think I held that with pliers against the bench pin. That is that piece of wood sticking out of the front of the workbench with a notch cut in it. I do that for filing most of the parts. I hardly ever use the vise for filing.

Here’s one way to hold sights. Works for front or rear.
