Title: Lady's Lancaster
Post by: bama on October 22, 2021, 02:33:49 AM
Here is a project that I have been working on lately. It is a scaled down rifle for a lady in 32 caliber. The barrel is by Charley Burton of FCI barrels and is a very slender 38" long that he made up for me. The wood is from Harrison's Gunstocks, lock is a Chamber's Dale Johnson, butt plate and trigger guard are Reeve's castings, thimbles are 5/16" Bevin's, nose cap and triggers were made by me.

I am getting ready to start the carving on the butt stock.

What a great start, the sketching is wonderful. Could you see that gtrain before you started or was it a surprise, gonna be a bear to carve? Can't wait to see it with a finish on it.

This is looking like some real eye candy, lucky lady. I would be interested in some of the specks of the stock for a lady's rifle.

That's shaping up to be something real special.  I love the carving detail already, even in pencil it pops!

You are really great at the design phase - love it all.  And you're giving me lots of ideas for the Lancaster I am building.  Be a lot of new stuff for me to learn better.

Hi Jim,
Another Haines-inspired gun.  You are a glutton for punishment!  Beautiful design!

Tim, I have used Harrison Gunstock wood almost exclusively over the last 25 years and I have gotten to the point were I can tell how the grain and curl will show up on a finished rifle. Most of this wood was cut by Freddy in the 70's and 80's and is hard as a brick bat. You have to use very sharp chisels or it will chip out if you catch the grain wrong but man it finishes up very nice. Great wood, not cheap but well worth the price.

Thanks for all of the kind words on the design. This Isaac Haines pattern is one I have wanted to try for a long time and now is the time. I am going to do my best to not make a mess of it.

Any progress photos Jim?   Looks like it will be a beauty.  What is the length of pull?

I always enjoy your fine with sir.

God Bless,   Marc

I finally got to start the carving on this little rifle. It’s hard to see the details because of the curl in the stock.

That's funny, because looking at the first pics and having used a piece of wood like that I was thinking my chisels out in the shop are getting dull just from me sitting in the house looking at the photos.    :o

I took a picture in some cross light which helps show the carving a little better along with all the areas I need to clean up. :(

While I am no fan of raise carved rifles, this one seem exceptional.I made that comment to Jud Brennan at a CLA show a few years ago about the labor involved in these carved guns and he said he can make 6 unornamented rifles in the same length of time.Be sure to show us the finished job when it's ready.

I finally got the carving done and have applied the first coat of stain. I think the color is going to be just right when I apply the finish.

Thanks for all your comments. This rifle was a big challenge because of it’s size. It’s hard to make a 3/4 size rifle of a 1780’s / 1790 period rifle and get it to look proportionally correct. Thanks to Charlie Burton of FCI Barrels for making me a barrel 38” long with a 1” breech that has a very nice swamp and wound up at 3/4” at the muzzle in 32 caliber. The little rifle handles like a dream. I just found out the young lady I built this rifle for is 18 months old. Talk about a planning Dad. 😜
