Title: Bag #44 - Belt Bag, worn in

Here's a little Lyman-esque belt bag I finished at Middleton Place this weekend.  4x6 inch cowhide.  Welted on sides.  Buckskin hold-down thong.  The belt loops on the rear are double sewn, and welted at the top to protect the stitching.  First picture came out a bit redder than it really is.  Hope you enjoy.   God Bless,   Marc

Marc, you state "hope you enjoy". How could anyone not like this wonderful example of a proper belt bag. The older I get the more I find a belt bag and small day horn is more than enough to get me through a day of hunting or a club trail walk. Thank you for posting it. Made my day.

Love your design on this one…the large single belt loop is a great idea, and should wear well.  I have a similar one that I carry my fire kit and a flint wallet in…but truth be told, just like the Muskrat says…it’s plenty big enough for a day in the field, or a short trail walk. 👍🏼

Yes, Middleton Place near Charleston.  I am blessed to have great friends in the Hill family, and they got my wife and me into living history.  They regularly set up on Living History weekend there, and invited me to join them.  It was great fun, and I got to talk leather working with a lot of people.  Talking hunting pouches of course allowed me to talk muzzleloaders too.   

Just this weekend I was describing to folks how a belt bag could be used.  One use being a nice day out squirrel hunting.  This bag would hold a flint, a screwdriver, a handful of balls, and a piece of patching cloth.  With a rifle in hand and a powder horn, you have what you need.  Except a Snickers bar.  It'd get pretty flat. 

I made two bags to sew at the event, and ended up running out of stitches to sew in demonstration.  This little bag was one of these.  The Hills demonstrated rifle making, lye soap, butter, and powder horn making, as well as pewter casting.  I've probably left out something. 

My dad made leather products with that sort of wide loop.  It rides very stable.  The slot in the middle is so it can flex a bit if needed. If one were to wear pants with a belt loop, a wider slot would allow the belt loop to straddle a loop.

I've always preferred a wider loop on most my belt bags as well.

I wear a fairly wide belt over a hunting frock or even just my shirt and that bag-loop style would work well, perhaps
on the opposite side of my plug bayonet sheath.

You do fine work!  I find the belt style bags to be really practical for day hunts.
