Title: Sitting Fox Light Dragoon Bess
Post by: kswan on November 23, 2021, 09:38:23 PM
Hello Folks.
I was wondering if anyone has any experience building this particular kit from sitting fox. What lock and barrel is included, in letting and such.

Thanks.

You should talk to sitting fox.

So, for anyone curious about the parts, I finally got in touch with sitting fox. Barrel by Shaw and the lock by Malden(?) same people who make Re Davis locks. I had a hard time to hear him so please correct me on these points if I'm wrong or off on spelling.

My understanding is that he gathers parts from various sources, packages them together and ships Sitting Fox "kit" to the customer.

He might have been saying Mold and Gun Shop, regarding the lock. I’d personally want real specs on what I was getting.

https://www.shawcustombarrels.com/ He said they profiled barrels from Shaw to octagon round.

Shaw barrels are located not far from where I live near Pittsburgh. They make excellent barrels, I have one on an "unmentionable" that shoots great but I didn't know they made barrels destined for muzzleloaders. I'm guessing its just a blank that is final machined to proper dimensions.

Was there an English musket that had and Oct/rnd barrel?

Sir,
Octagon to round is not the correct barrel profile, it should be round from breech to muzzle.  The barrel as shown currently on S.F. website illustration for K-5 Light Dragoon Bess, while may work for the S.F. kit, is not correct geometry for an English musket.

If you are interested in a British Officers Model Musket (Rogers Rangers) would reccommend that you contact Larry Zornes of the Mold and Gun Shop, 6493 S.R. 139, Jackson, OH 45640.   From his last years catalog:

"British Officers Model (Rogers Rangers), round face lock, 16 gauge smoothbore, walnut stock, brass mountings with sling swivels.   Formerly belonging to North Star West".

This modern model was developed by Curly Gostomski of North Star Enterprises, went to North Star West with Matt Denison, and now resides with Mr. Zornes.

Mr Zornes has the lock listed seperately in his catalog also as "Rogers Rangers Round Face".

If this is of interest would encourage you to contact him directly.   His advertisements are in Muzzleloader Magazine.   Will send PM with his tx number.

Hi,
I don't believe anyone has documented what Rogers Rangers carried.  Ranger units were issued old standard muskets early in the F&I war and then near the end (after 1758), some were issued modified dragoon carbines and captured French muskets. The octagon/round barrel in the kit is wrong.  It should be tapered round.

If I wanted a historically correct what ever , sitting  fox wouldn't be on my list of places to buy from.
