Old Marine buddy wanted a pistol to carry arond on his boar hunts. Decided a plain, long barreled southern style pistol was in order, most would call it a bear pistol. Has a Kibler lock a Chambers .50 13" barrel and a piece of maple I had laying around the shop. I made the buttcap and side plates, other furniture purchased. I wasn't totally happy qith the finish, but than I though this type of pistol wouldn't be too finely finished so probably fit in well with the times. Now back to the jaeger and horse pistol.

All, appreciate the kind words. Rich, it's a bit nose heavy. There's a lot of barrel hanging out past the grip. Doing some reading I understand that after getting dogs to chase the bear up a tree hunter would either hold it like a carbine or if possible rest the front of the stock on a low tree branch. Hope to get it to the range this week to see how it shoots. Cheers.

I use a two-handed hold with the left hand on the fore stock with the pistol close to my face. Very comfortable and steady.

Nicely done. As per your remarks about finish, I think you over worrying about finish. It looks really neatly done. All original work I’ve ever handled definitely had a good bit of texture. With the exception of 19th century British work. Then I doubt there’s more a few people that can equal that kind of work today. BJH

Probably belongs in Black Powder Shooting, but didn't want to break the thread sooo. Range report. Shot a .480 ball with a ticking patch about .018 thick. Goal was to find a plinking load and a hunting load. Started at 25 grains of FFF and it was like shooting an air gun. Bumped it up to 30 grains and averaged 685 fps with the 175 gr ball, a nice easy to shoot paper killer. Worked up to 40 and 50 gr. 40gr averaged 890 fps and 50gr was about 1020 fps. I shot the 50gr with a hand on the forstock and found it still pretty easy to shoot. Of course 13" of swamped barrel means it has some weight. I could have gone to 60gr, but I'll leave that for the new owner. One handed shooting was, as you can guess, a bit challenging as the pistol has a lot of weight out front. Kibler lock was flawless. Next week it goes to its new home.
