Title: New Jaeger ready for pick up Saturday
Post by: Ron Scott on November 27, 2021, 12:41:11 AM
This rifle goes home with it's owner tomorrow.  It is the first rifles finished with the CNC triggers . It has Chris Laubach's Jaeger lock, a FCI 60 caliber barrel and Armenian Walnut stock. The decoration is modest in keeping with the clients intent to hunt with it.

I love the rifle Ron.  A couple of questions if I may:  the walnut appears to have very fine pores...did you make an extra effort to fill the pores before final finish?  And the wrist escutcheon appears to be relatively flat, which appears to me to have interferred with rounding the top of the wrist adjacent the inlay.  The wrist too is quite short which may add to that appearance.  Am I out to  lunch?
Please explain to me how lavish decoration interferes with a hunting rifle...the rifle to me, is screaming for more decoration.
Still very credible work with fit and finish to your standard.  Nicely done, and thanks for the look-see.

Lovely rifle. Life is too short to hunt with an ugly gun.
Would like to see a photo of the whole rifle.

Hi Taylor,
This pores in the Walnut are very small, (very dense Walnut from Armenia) and there are many thin coats of oil. The wrist inlay along with the other furniture are molded from an original and somewhat dictated the shape of the butt stock. This was the parts set used in my most recent NMLRA seminar and are available from MLBS.  The light refection of the fluorescent tubes created some distortion in the photos of the wrist. The wrist of this rifle, like most rifles in my collection is about 1.5 inches deep, 1.5 inches high and pretty much round in cross section. This dimension is large are compared with many American Flintlocks. Budget was another factor dictating the extent of the decoration. I was very pleased with the appearance and function of the CNC triggers machined for me by Alaska arms LLC. I wish I had this high quality Walnut, Lock and triggers when I fist started my interest in Jaeger Rifles thirty odd years ago. Having access to every good original Jaegers, helped understand a number of subtle details that Black and White photos had previously not disclosed. I am currently interested in the somewhat later, Rococo decorated rifles from Suhl. There is an original in my shop now and another that hopefully will find its way here for study.

Very, very fine work as usual, Ron! Even in your attempts to tone it down it is still an amazing piece!

Thanks for the detailed reply Ron!  I understand that the architecture of these rifles is different from longrifles, and study them whenever the opportunity arises.  I have Shumway's Jaeger article collection as sold by TOW and Erhard Wolf's great book on Jaeger rifles, and even own an original that is in dire need of serious restoration.  Although I love the canvas that these rifles provide for decorqation, I am primarily a shooter, and find this design of rifle very conducive to offhand work, comparable I think to the best of the English sporting rifles.  Your new triggers combined with Chris' lock will make a formidable combination in a hunting rifle.
Always love seeing your work...appreciate you posting this.

Ron; another masterpiece. Will I be seeing this fine piece at any of the local shoots here in the Willamette Valley?

Minor correction on Taylor's last post. The Jaeger is almost as good as a fine English Sporting Rifle.
The German rifle might be as good as the flintlock English Guns. ;D ;)

Exceptional as always Ron. I am an admirer of "reserved elegance" and this one is most appealing.

Hi Ron,
Fabulous work!  I have the same trouble with lighting on finished guns.  Often shadows and glare distort the image giving a false sense of the shape.  I agree with Taylor and Daryl, these short barreled German and English rifles are the best handling hunting guns I've ever experienced.  I was recently set up as an 18th century gunsmith at a living history event.  I had a display of firearms I built that included my version of the Edward Marshall rifle, a Rev War period long rifle, and a "golden age" period long rifle.  I allowed folks to handle and shoulder the rifles and without a doubt, the clear favorite was the Edward Marshall rifle.  It felt the best to the majority of folks who shouldered the rifles, and of course it has strong German jaeger rifle features.  Again, beautiful rifle Ron and thanks for sharing.

Ron,
My compliments! Thanks for an abundant sharing of pics. For a moment I thought I was hovering over a glass case at The Met.

The owner is very wise to come pick up this treasure rather than having it shipped! He or she has a beautiful masterpiece right there . Congratulations all around!

I'd like to see the rest of the rifle. Photos of forestock, entry pipe area , muzzle, etc.
It's a fantastic build, no doubt about it.
