Title: Sycamore gun
Post by: 40Haines on September 30, 2009, 07:09:05 AM
I really like my Lancaster's, but they just seem a little skinny for me. (blasphemy!)

I am  6'3" 235# and I wanted a pure hunting rifle with a little meat to it.

So there is some extra wood in the wrist, lock panels and fore end, butt plate but I really like the feel of it.

With the oct to round bbl. she still is light and fairly nimble.

Like I said, I wanted this one for me and with the extra meat, she feels just right .

I was hoping for more pop from the wood, but this is what the gun God gave me and it IS kind of pretty.

With 85 gr FFF and a .530 ball and denim patch she cuts one hole @ 25yds.

I know it pales in comparison to you guys work but it is about perfect for me.

I humbly submit.

Very cool and the sycamore gives it a great look.  Thanks for showing it off!

Very nice work. I like it.  If the bottom of the stock was a little more rounded, helping to slim down that lock panel a little, I'd REALLY like it  ;D  Good job.   All it needs now is some honest wear.

This is the first rifle that I have seen in sycamore. Really different, but I kind of like it. How did you stain the wood?
Enjoy shooting the rifle! sounds like it will be fun to hunt with.

Good work.  That's what you get with sycamore unless it's cut just so to reveal the rays better. I'd be mighty pleased if I were you.  Nice job.

Very nice rifle!  I like the look of the Sycamore.  I bet she will serve you well in the woods.

I've seen sycamore, but never used it.  How does it handle?  Hard, soft?  Cut cleanly or not?  Light, heavy?

You and I are both out of step with the times. I like a gun with a bit more meat on it's bones too. ;) Not a military musket mind you, but something like you've done. Real pretty work and I love the wood.

I handled a couple of guns at the Williamsburg Gunsmith Shop and they had huge butt plates, stocks, and slightly thicker forends on them. Ohhhhhh so nice.
