Title: December Postal Match RESULT AND NEW WINNER!
Post by: MuskratMike on December 01, 2021, 08:08:00 PM
Let's do something a little different this month. We're going to have an old fashioned rabbit shoot. Down load the target I have posted by simply going to: NMLRA.org/downloads
The target will be right there on the main page. Here are the rules. 25 yards OFFHAND OR OFF A BENCH, must be a squirrel rifle (.36 or smaller) if you don't have one that size shoot the smallest caliber you own (I can't believe with the shooters we've been having that there are any who don't own a small bore rifle). The target says to shoot the target in the prone position, DISREGARD THIS. You get 5 targets ONLY as some people have to drive to a range this makes it fair for all. 5 shots at each target with a possible score of 50-5X using the half ball rule. 1 shot at each of the 5 bulls on the target. Let's get out there and get some "bunnies"!

There might even be a prize for the winner (as the judge I am not eligible but will shoot the targets for no score) as long as we get at least 5 shooters (not counting me). Good luck to everyone who is brave enough to shoot this match!

Looks like a bush bunny to me. Good target.
I've printed off enough for Taylor and I, I think.
I suspect his .25 could get a workout.

Offhand vs bench ain't fair....should be one of the other...but it's not my rules ,so I'll shut up.

Yes I am getting mush brain. I changed the post to say rabbit not squirrel!
It is not offhand vs bench it is either, heck you can shoot prone if you want I just can't get up and down anymore you can lean against a post if you want as long as you are 25 yards away from the target.. I would imagine that most if not all will shoot off a bench. Sorry for any confusion.
Mike

Sounds good to me. I haven't benched my .36 yet, at 25 yards.
The last month's target was the first time I benched it at 50. LOL
Looks like a difficult offhand target to me, any more.  40years ago,
easy/peasy.
Considering those X rings and the possibility to get 5, 4-point X's, well
now, THAT's a goal to strive for, from any position.  ;D

Don't presently have a .36, building a .40 flint. Might use my wife's .40. However might just shoot it with a .58. I won't be using a bench, rabbits run to fast for me to set one up. Helping a friend with an elk hunt so hopefully I can make some time. Like the target.

Well I went out today as you never know how many dry days here in Oregon you will get in December. About 55 degrees, slight overcast and zero wind (no excuses). Shot my .32 caliber Mathew Gillespie "tribute rifle" Don Bruton made for me. .310 round ball with a .015 ticking patch with a 50-50 mix of T.O.T.W. Mink and pure Neatsfoot oiled patches 35 grains of GOEX 3F. These scores are not to be counted I just wanted to show some options on the target. I did at first have a little trouble seeing on the "original" target the individual bullseyes, it all seemed to be one big black target. The sun peeked out a little more and I then could see the 5 bullseye's. Just for shucks and grins I pasted orange stickies over the 10 rings on one target. i could see them a little better but frankly not as much as I thought.
Okay everybody bet out there and shoot some rabbits.

Maybe we should keep a target ,next to us on the bench…so we can approximate where the circles are…😃

Scoring yourself a little stiff on the head shot, I see. After enlarging the picture, I have to concur.
Hopefully one of these days Taylor and I can get out.

Ah, I see, You put some florescent stickers on the 10 rings to give a larger aiming point.
Title: Re: December Postal Match
Post by: MuskratMike on December 04, 2021, 04:27:26 AM
Since the orange stickers are the same size as the 10 ring (I poorly drew in the X-ring) I wanted to see if they would show up in my sights better than the all black bullseye. While I did shoot that target slightly better if I hadn't totally missed one of the bulls on my "unaltered" target the scores would have been virtually the same. Not worth the trouble in my humble opinion. Again since my targets don't count I am mostly just playing around.

Suggesting us visual "options", is never a mistake when dealing with US. ;D
Aiming buds or spots as used in chunk shooting, are also useful if the POI is not "right" for whatever range the contest happens to be.

......and that's why we're shooting at 25 not 50 yards. It's not all that hard, if a shaky old man with bad eyes can do it all you Young fella's should ace it.

If you "get" the picture from the NMLRA web site, it will be correct on standard paper.

I printed a few off last night. It appears that the percentage tab in the PDF is for viewing only. By changing the % you can view larger or smaller views of the target.
It printed the same size target regardless of the percent it was set on.

I shot the December target today and did OK, but won't post a photo until tomorrow.  Btw, Nessmuck's suggestion to have a copy of that target next to you on the bench is a good one as the low sun and glare makes aiming difficult.  E.g., on our range, we shoot to the SE so this problem is amplified + the target itself is in the shade.  Having an extra target on the bench really helped to eliminate some of the guesswork when aiming at "that darn wabbit."

It's been unseasonably warm here, which meant a trip to the range for another BP postal match today.  Here's my target from yesterday.  It's not too bad considering the glare:

.313 RB, 20gr. Goex FFFg, Taylor.  Receiver sight on rifle.  I fired this mostly because our range had just re-opened, but I'm not firing for record or competing this month.  It just felt good to get out and shoot!

Maven that top target at a quick glance looks like a 43 1X. Hopefully we get some more shooters but that is one fine target. What do you all score it at?
Title: Re: December Postal Match
Post by: Maven on December 15, 2021, 02:18:26 AM
MM, I think it's 34-1X, but maybe I'm missing something.  And thanks for the compliment!

Maven you short change yourself. Anything in the center white and black ring is 10 points, any thing in the black "X" is a 10X, the outer ring is 9 points and the body of the rabbit is 5 points 10+10x+9+9+5=43(1x)
Clear as mud?

That would be welcome here.  ;D This week, heading down to a chill factor of -26
apparently.  That's only -14.8F, but any more, it's too cold for us old folks. At one time
our limit was -20, because springs broke if much colder than that. Then, it was -10, then -5,
now even 0(32F)seems to cold. ::)

Been unseasonably warm here but the wind only drops below 20 mph for a day or two. Temps in the +20s right now and it snowed. Wanted to go look for an elk in the new ML season but had a sick dog. Tomorrow I have dentist and eye doc. Then it will warm up again. Have a match to run on Sunday and that’s the last day of the ML season. Sigh… Friend needs a tree eating deer shot. Maybe Saturday.

I could try it but even at 25 yards rest it would be a challenge. East slope of the Rockies in winter. Gusting 76 at the airport, 60 or better at my house. Might be a LITTLE less at the range…. I-90 traffic routed through town. Last night it was backed up about 3 miles from the exit. Some county roads impassible, or they say “impossible to keep open”.

We've been warm with Gulf Breezes and some Atlantic Air, but NOW that Canuckistani Tundra Breath is blowing down here and chillin' my tootsies.  Oh but I get next two Fridays off, so there's that.  Shoot well fella's.

Oh and by the way, I have a shooter neighbor with a VERY long barn. I haven't asked him yet, but he might allow shooting down the hallway.  It'd be brilliant for load development, but a bit like cheating for a contest where others only get to play out of doors.

What about sitting in the barn (or in my house) and shooting out the door/window?  That'd be no different that shooting from a covered line-which I don't have access to otherwise.

Well I'll have to talk to Doug about that. If it was mine-I would have already done a lot of load testing in there. I just checked by satellite imagery--it's 200' end to end.  We'll see.  But also, I have a 25 yard stump at my shack and it could use some more lead.

Shot this Sunday, a little cold but light wind, about 6MPH.
I used my .58 Jaeger because currently I do not have a squirrel rifle. Not a ML one. I shot it offhand, did not use any visual aids as you can see.
Though it only scores a 20/2x, I am happy with it the small bulls look like black dots at 25 yards, hard to stay focused on them.
Yes, I would shoot real rabbits with this rifle. Cottontails are way bigger than this one.

First somewhat  cold, by our standards, snap, was 8 when I got up. Was 15 now 13 (above). I have seen -40 here in the Yellowstone valley but it’s been quite some time back.
When I was living in East Anchorage back in the 1970s. Driving a mile or so towards town would bring it from -40 to -20. Cook Inlet weather.
Since the wind is not blowing I think I will go sight in the N Hawk swivel breech. See it will really go ”bang” other than proof.

My biggest hold up this time was not having a printer. I've been bumming print jobs, the very few that I need, for some time since lightning killed my printer years ago. I do want to shoot some of these matches since there is no local competition (and by local, I mean within a 2-hours drive), and I like shooting for score.

Too busy today with catching up around the shack and getting in more firewood and clearing for new boundary fence. But I aim to get a printer next year. Everybody have a great New Year and hope no ice storms flatten your forest.

Thank you gentlemen, but as I just PM'd Mike, I wasn't shooting for record.  Also, I have too many doctors' appointments in January to think about a target and match.  Medical world isn't fun, but I have to get this stuff out of the way prior to wintering over in Florida*.  (Yes, I'm sorry to say my wife and I have become snowbirds, although we didn't go south last winter.)   Ergo, someone besides me is the true winner and will have the honor of choosing the next target and match conditions.  If I have free time, I'll make every effort to participate, of course.

A Happy and Healthy New Year to you all!

Ok, I won this match by default. Hard to lose when no one else competes.
I have been giving it some thought. Those living above the 49th parallel, and those close below it have a hard time just living.
Shooting time becomes a luxury. I propose we hold January's match in conjunction with February.
Considering how little participation December's match garnered this proposal will give more flexibility, for those wanting to shoot.
So, if I do not get a howling negative response, this will be the format.
I will decide on a target by tomorrow.

Ok, I won this match by default. Hard to lose when no one else competes.
I have been giving it some thought. Those living above the 49th parallel, and those close below it have a hard time just living.
Shooting time becomes a luxury. I propose we hold January's match in conjunction with February...

I'm not following what "in conjunction" matches would accomplish. It's not like we're gathering annual points totals. Being firmly in the temperate zone I have no idea which month will bring the rains or the ice-storm/frigidity that would ruin my weekend opportunities to shoot. With DST there's just no light at the end of our work days for any chance of evening shooting.

But I'm not in opposition to any sort of attempt to increase participation. I'm afraid that those folks who have local shoots with regularity won't be shooting "postal" matches when their local matches start back up. I don't have such luxury.  I may even get a printer.

Alacran: it don't matter much to me either way but it looks like me and you, Wade and Daryl. Let's see if we can get one or two more and make it a January shoot. But hey you're the match director this month do what strikes your fancy.

Long range forecast has some mild weather starting 10th January. Not sure we can trust that, but whatever "works", works for us too.

no no, no one bother to mail me targets.  It was simply a complication because I didn't think ahead to get them printed out at work during the week and then ONE day presented itself I and I just couldn't bring myself to drive to work and bother the boss on the off day for targets. That would have consumed way too much of the shooting light.  Thanks for thinkin' of me all the same.
