Title: My Powder Horns

Anyone have any commentary on these three horns? I got them a while back out of an auction in the northwest. I've been using the smaller one on the bottom right. The one in the middle has a reddish coating over the horn. Any ideas what that coating might be? I haven't seen that on a horn before.

Very nice plain working horns.  The large ring on the end of the smaller one is different in a neat way.  Might the color on the one horn be natural colored schellac?  Just a guess.

Thanks Kevin. The little one is my favorite of the bunch. It definitely might just be a coat of shellac that was put on in a hurry (looks rather runny but is hard now). I know I've seen people refer to shellac as a finish on horns at some point, but I hadn't seen finished in it personally before.

A nice collection of horns, probably of 1840 period onward. By then, this type of horn was pretty much the standard for carrying powder. Since they were obtained in the great NW, there is a fair chance that they were Western Trail horns and would have been paired up with a nice rifle and bag. Good finds and thank you for showing them here.

been.

Thanks for showing. That´s a really very nice bunch of old horns, and good esthetic pictures too!
Furthermore the horns are in very good condition!
