Title: Sheetz is finally done (New/better pics 2/27/22)

45 inch swamped Allentown A weight from Rice. Davis late English lock. Davis late English  lock.  All the inlays are fine silver. The box is from MBS except for the side plates  which were too big. Buttplate and triggerguard  are my castings. 13 3/8 pull. Weighs about  7 .25 lbs. This was one of those guns that fought me all the way, especially the box.

Sorry for the poor picture quality, cell phone  camera  and hurrying to beat the snow storm. I'd love to keep this one  and squirrel hunt with it.

Hello Mike,

I really like your rifle.  As a collector of WV Original Longrifles, I noticed the acorn inlay.   I own a Todd Sherwood original longrifle with a very similar inlay shown in photo below. Did you copy an original Sheetz rifle?  I owned an original Sheetz that had smaller acorn inlays on the fore stock but have not seen this acorn inlay on other rifles.  Maybe someone else here has seen this acorn inlay on other originals.

I made another John Sheetz rifle a few years ago that is very similar. This one has the Rice Southern Classic barrel in .50. Very light gun, probably 6.5lbs.

Hi Mike,
How do you get that color?  It is very rich but old and mellow.  Very, very nice and one of the features I like about your maple stocked guns.

I think I used all dyes. Started with Klien's orange toner followed by golden brown followed by dark brown. Then I scrubbed the $#*! out of it. No acid on this one.

Love this rifle. I am from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and have seen and handled a few original Sheetz rifles. Side plate, patch box, carving, inlays, engraving, and overall architecture spot on.. Nicely executed Mike..

It's a comet actually. One passed over N. America in 1813 i think. Pretty well messed up everybody's head for a decade or two.

It was called the Great comet of 1812 or Napoleon's Comet! And also the harbinger of the War of 1812.

Beautiful work, Mike!  Many of my favorite originals are Sheetz rifles.  Your wrist, comb line and guard are dead on and "scream" Virginia!

About the “fight”.
I learned many years ago when I was the custom shop for a brass suppository maker that some guns just like being in the shop. They don’t want to leave, they have found a home OR as I suspected at Shiloh there was a gremlin with a trapdoor living under the floor that would steal dropped screws (only odd hard to replace ones like some 36 pitch from some project of mine) and would somehow create problems on “done” guns so that when you looked at it one last time before it went to shipping and it would be “how the &$%@# did that happen”. Trust me, I feel your pain.  Just went through it last week.
But again, nice work. Not a fan of dies and such but I like the color…

Relly like the rifle now that Jim Filipsky made the photos viewable. Like the carving behind the cheek piece. Before Jim's fix, couldn't really tell what was there.

Happens to be the last one I built too. Is this what a vacation feels like? I haven't had a vacation since the 90s.   :P

Nifty. I’d love to have that sign (you might actually get a good price for it if you auctioned it off) ….once you actually retire retire.

Since I can't do anything but sit in a chair right now I'm getting highly inspired. I've been going all gooey over Fordney for a couple days now.

 Open up your Virginia books. There’s a stock with a brass barrel inlet out there in your shop somewhere. Order yourself some inspiration from that!!
