Great video. I was in the architectural millwork business for over 40 years and my experience with figured maple was  normally limited to pre engineered blue printed panels with selected veneers or sequenced raw veneer which is how we paid for them per square foot. The waste was already factored in by the panel fabricator. Our use of solid maple for moldings, etc. was almost always select white maple lumber which required us to allow for a waste factor. With the understanding that you provide stocks that run from plain maple to premium plus grades for figure, does your rough lumber come pre selected or random? Hopefully I'm not asking you to reveal business practices, but what kind of waste factor do you assume? My apologies if my question is inappropriate.

I actually don't mind having some of what others may consider "imperfections" in a stock.
Makes them more interesting to me  :)   The last stock I got from Chambers [ N E fowling gun ] was a " 2nd" according to Barbie, and I really like it

Thank you Jim  for that very informative lesson. Being from the south originally, I knew very little about maple trees. Until now!

My Dad was a woodworker/collector and he forgot more than I will ever learn about wood.

Your videos are always informative- thanks for making them!  I got a walnut blank for your SMR you sold as a “second” due to some bark inclusion in the forearm.  Not only was the inclusion negligible, but the stock had some nice figure.  Your quality control is amazing especially considering how many stocks you run through.
Looking forward to the trade gun  ;D

Thanks for your me video. The subject of wood and especially, curly maple, has always fascinated me. You did a great job of showing so many facets of wood in this video. Thank you for taking the time to explain all that you did. Lorrie made the finishing very easy and not nearly as difficult as some portray. Thanks again.

I saw it the other day and thought it was very informative. My buddy was asking me about curly maple just the other day, so I sent him this video link. He has been on a kick of buying modern center fire rifles with curly maple stocks.

When I was young, I asked "what makes a maple tree get curl"? The people I asked did not know so they suggested to me that maybe the tree was "sick".
   I like the comment in the video that suggests it might be more in the genetics....similar to people with natural curly hair.
