Title: Kibler 58 Colonial
Post by: Rwnblack on January 20, 2022, 05:49:09 AM
I just finished a 58 Kibler Colonial with extra fancy maple.  I am really going to enjoy shooting this.  Top quality components all around.  I used aquafortis on the stock but it is darker than I hoped but still very nice.  I am going to let the brass tarnish naturally so the whole gun has antique appearance. It is -30 outside so I will have to wait a bit to shoot it.

I like a darker stock....I don't like the ones that are So dark that 3/4 of the curl is covered up.
Your wood curl is still Very pronounced, I would be thrilled with that rifle. Congratulations and Enjoy! :)

I am in agreement, the color is really nice! Beautiful work! And what’s wrong with shooting a flintlock at -30?
I hunt in those temps quite often.  ;D

How did you get that flat on the Brass?

   Thanks, Tim C.

Color looks good to me.  Even better if it was a little darker.  Great job!

Thank you for the compliments.  I was tempted to carve it but decided to let the classic lines and nice wood speak for itself.

To give that brass that finish, I polished to 400 grit with emery cloth but then rubbed it with 800 grit.  That took the shine off and gave it a nice soft finish.  I will rub some black powder residue so it tarnishes the brass but I like the current finish too.

Can you share the rifles weight and where is the balance point is located.

If I was just getting into black powder for hunting......this would be my entry rifle in 58 cal.

You could have put shoe polish on it and it still would be very nice.

Just use it........ patina happens..

Great quality in components.

I'm in the wait to shoot crowd....take your time and enjoy the moment....... frost bite hurts.

besides you'll wanna experiment with lube-patch and ball size not to mention which powder.

The barrel may need some shooting to settle in.

a low profile small tang peep will really bring out the long sight radius.

Enjoy ,,and congrats....

It's 8.6 lbs and the balance point is perfect.  When I hold it my forward most finger is about 2” behind the entry pipe.  I may make a peep sight for it but thought I would try these first. The rear sight may be far enough ahead I can still see it reasonably well.  On most other guns I have to use peep sights.

Here are pics of the sight I made for my Kibler SMR and it works great.

I took it to the range today, really nice rifle. I think I will make a peep sight for it similar to the one on my SMR.  Surprisingly little recoil for a 58.

I added a lollipop tang sight and took the rifle to the range.  It shoots very nicely.  Here are 6 shots at 50 yards.

Just 70 gr of ffg goex, 575 ball, 0.013” patch.  I amazed at how easy this barrel is to clean at the end of the day.
