Lets see some Cherry Stocks. Fowlers, Rifles, Pistols, everything. Im having one built this year. Id like to get some ideas on colors.

Not sure how well the color shows as the lighting sucked, but this is a new England fowler in cherry. If I remember correctly, I used a cherry stain on it.

Hi,
Nice guns Rich and Mike!! Here are 3. The first is a copy of the Hawk fowler from Deerfield, MA, the second is a generic NE fowler from the 1760s-1770s and the third is a French gun in the style "Englais" taking inspiration from Gusler and Lavin's book "Decorated Firearms" and examples in the Met Museum of Art in New York. None of these were stained with lye.

Oh my. The colors are all great. Amazing beautiful stuff guys. If anybody else has a cherry rifle, lets see them.

You don't have to dye cherry. Just put it in the sun for a few days, use some oil, boiled linseed, or Tried and True, and let it age to a beautiful color naturally.
Waterlox will also work nicely. Tried and True makes a varnish oil, but use it very sparingly, as it will take some time to dry.
Sunlight is the best "dye" for cherry.

"Fiery dragon" Do you mean the "the butt ugly hideous serpent sideplate that Mark Silver chose"? ;) (not my words) That's a great gun, looks like alot of figure in the wood too. And your dragon is marvelous. It's great to have a creative mind and not be stuck copying other peoples work. :)

If you want to see a real cool cherry stocked fowler, take another look at E.K.'s creation which has been re-posted on the Contemporary Maker's blog again....complete with a background story this time . 1st posted last Fall. This gun just gets better and better every time I look at it ! :)

Here's my cherry stocked .58 made by Larry Cruise. Nice early style flintlock. The figured cherry gets darker and prettier after a few years.

Nice rifle, Jerry! Buttstock reminds me of the Feather rifle and Woodsrunner rifle.

Yeah, Rich, the gun was based partly on a composite of features from those guns... that's what Larry said inspired him on this one, and what drew me to it. Early Virginia? Berks? Whatever, I think it's believable 1760s to 1780s and I like it. It's a joy to carry and shoot.
