Title: Two Lancaster Horns Pt II
Post by: Tim Crosby on March 03, 2022, 08:42:47 PM
This horn is in very good condition, the butt looks messy but it is very tight. At first I thought it may have been on another horn at one time but I think that's the way it was made. I did not want to do anything that would drastically change it, as in new butt so I worked with what I had.  There were leaks but they have been fixed and it is now air tight. One leg of the original staple in the butt was broken so I replaced it and made a new stopper. I wish I could get threads that look as good as the ones on this horn and tip. Should be good for another 250 years.

Great work, Tim!!! Having the plug spread beyond the edges of the horn is different, but what you did to make it right actually makes the horn quite presentable. Once in awhile a horn comes by that has a large butt plug and this one fits into that category. Thanks for the photos.

Any chance there was a ring butted up against the end plug?

That's what I thought at first because of the dark looking areas, I thought they may have been from glue of some sort. I slipped a ring on and some of the uneven areas on the lip would have been under it but about an equal amount of the ring would have stuck out as well. Also if there had been a ring I would expect there may have been holes where it was held on and there were no extra holes. The pins that were there fit well.

Nice careful work on a great horn.  I can easily imagine it traveling with some of my ancestors who migrated out of Lancaster County in the 1790s.
