Any thoughts about this lock.
-
Borden or Bonden perhaps ?
-
Daniel Border, Bedford County, Pa.
Any chance you have the rest of the gun?
-
Can we get a full length view? Thanks for what you’ve shown so far.
-
Heck of a nice D. Border, Bedford lock with the famous 'Bedford Rat Tailed' lock plate. Thank you for showing it. Do you have the rest of the rifle? Just asking for my friends here on the Forum.

Dick is correct on all accounts in his reply. Very nice and thanks for showing it.
-
Thank you. It is nice to get to see the internals of a classic original Bedford lock.
-
Hi,
Nice lock and I do enjoy seeing the internals. It is well made for sure. I am curious about the cut out for the drum. I would love to see how the barrel fit there.

Why does it have remnants of a flint fence on it?
-
I have wondered about the flintlock fence remains myself, but it seems to have been a decorative feature. Here are two Borders that have the same thing.

Well that's odd. ???
-
It sure is. I've had two other Borders that were exactly the same way.

Looks like the faux pan fence would provide some protection for the wood at the barrel breech
-
Is that a new stock?
-
No it is not a new stock. I have been told and I believe this rifle was constructed from canalized parts from other rifles. I have removed the barrel( octagonal to round smooth bore) it is fastened with pins via staple, and soldered brass pieces drilled for through pins. There is one staple that has been removed that doesn't lineup to the existing pin holes.
I do believe this rifle was made during the latter half of the 19TH century.
I will post some pics from by phone

Here is a lock on a William Defibaugh that has the same flintlock fence

Notice the thin forward shield on the Defibagh lock, evidently intended to keep the forward wood from being scorched. This may well be the reason for this unusual feature.
-
William Border. I have castings for this lock.

Interestingly, there is an apparently orphaned D. Border lock for sale on ebay right now. Not sure how you value a separate piece like this, other than it is out of my budget for a lock.
Note from moderator: ALR rules prohibit links to items for sale on other sites.

It is the same piece.

VERY basic lock mechanism and the only way to make it even more simple would be to not use a bridle. In the 1960's I made a few Bedfords for a man in Virginia whose name has long faded from my memory,Larry????.I got the hammers from a man in Ohio and I think his name was Ken Roethlesberger.Does anyone make a Bedford lock now?

For that price, I'm guessing someone has a D Border rifle without a lock.
Either that, or I'm really out old touch on the value of old signed locks.
-
"It is the same piece."
I don't think so. It is very similar, but some of the ageing marks are different.
-
It's the same lock...the screw slots even line up looking at the internals.
-
You and Mr. Wolf are right, it is the same lock. The pictures presented on here show some obvious dents in the hammer and I can't seem to see them on ebay. Maybe it is a difference in photography. But yes the screws are the same ones. Thanks for the insight.
But why would someone separate that lock from the rifle shown, especially when the seller has nothing else related for sale. Some mysteries are just beyond me.
-
Well, somebody thought it was worth $1247.22! if only I could afford that for a lock.
-
Rocky29? Your pictures are wonderful. They may not make the grade for others though. After all they don’t have anybody's wood pile, or rock wall, to obscure all the fine details of your rifle. And we didn’t get to see your work boots, or fuzzy slippers, or bare toes. Welcome anyway.

Personally, I always focus on the toes when possible. Otherwise I'm sad.
