Title: For my matchlock friends
Post by: David Rase on June 19, 2022, 12:20:35 AM
Here are a few photos of my just finished 20g matchlock, well not really finished, I am waiting on the weather to dry out and temperature to rise above 58 degrees here in the Pacific North Wet so I can get a few coats of oil to dry in a reasonable amount of time.  This build started out based on the Newtowne musket, and as is the usual with my projects, ended up as another composite build.  Other than being a pear butted matchlock, this musket does not follow any particular school, if there is such a thing as schools for matchlocks.  Hand made lock, Rice Andrew Dolep profile barrel, Harrison maple stock blank.  Wayne Estes 4 hour miracle finish on lock and barrel.  My intention is to remove the blue  finish with Naval jelly for a French grey but decided to leave it blue for the time being.

The barrel is 41" long and the gun weighs 7 1/2 lbs.

That is awesome David. What holds the lock in place?

Like the flowing lines from the front of the lock panel to the butt, very appealing. Have you shot it? Was curious as to the relationship of the butt's pitch in relation to recoil. It is reminiscent of a fusil de chasse's pitch.

Ja! Sehr gut fertiges kunstwerke mit der Luntenschloss. Is that type of gun loaded with a smoldering fuse that close to the flash hole or is is removed before loading.I watched a German loading one on the range in Kitchener,Ontario in 1987 and I THINK he hung the fuse or wick up during the reloading process. This is a beautiful reproduction of a simple relic and I like it.

The match is removed Bob.
normal proceedure was to hold the match in the left hand, burning ends outwards between the fingers, not in the palm.

Great wood and job, David!

Mike,
Right behind the pan is a machine screw that passes through a hole in the lock plate bolster and then screws into the breech plug bolster.

Don't need or want a matchlock, but dang David that is one seriously cool piece you have created.

Is it shot/pointed with the butt under the arm, rather than with the butt on the shoulder?

Daryl,
The gun is shouldered.

David that is one cool gun...! Is their anything you can't do well.  ?   That stock is beautiful..!
Quite a few years ago a friend of mine made one. But not as nice is this. It was the only gun he ever made that he shot a perfect 5 s with. They are impressive to say the least...

Hey brother,

How does it shoot?   Looks like loads of fun.  Less recoil than your last one?

Look forward to seeing you in Lexington.
