Title: Red tape or string on barrel?
Post by: DougS on July 01, 2022, 11:32:58 PM
Hello,

I have seen a few pictures of rifles at Martin's Station that appear to have a piece of red tape or string tied on to their barrels.

Does this have a purpose for shooting?

Thank you,

Doug

Doug I cant say for Martins station shooters but I tie a 6 maybe 8 inch single piece of black sewing thread on the end of my barrel right in front of the front sight on my gun when hunting. It dont interfere with the shot. I cant see it when shooting but I can tell the slightest wind direction change.

This ties the ramrod to the barrel. It is for safety. To remind the re enactors, the the ramrod are not to be used.

Thanks to both for your response.

The safety procedure does make a lot of sense.

Thanks again.
