Title: hand made awl
Post by: jdm on July 08, 2022, 01:47:55 AM
I was digging around in the dungeon looking for a few things to put on the table at the K.C. show next weekend . I had stuck this back in one of the drawers. Neat old awl. I'm not sure of age or where I picked it up. It was  missing the end piece when I got it . I always thought I'd talk someone into making a cap for it  but never got around to it. I thought it's the kind of thing some of you might like and took some quick pics. Any comments are welcome.  Jim

 Is it made of horn?

Yes  Tim. It's made of horn.I thought it was neat that the maker used his artistic talent  to make a simple tool into something a little more special.

Cool. An end plug would turn that into a neat little container for a sewing kit. —JB

Who knows? Maybe it had a base plug at one time.

I think you may be on to something. It's kind of fancy for a guy to have sitting around on his work bench, but a sewing kit ...

Robert I feel sure it did. The way it is now it's very uncomfortable in the palm of your hand.   Jim

I used an old spring out of a broken pocket knife to make an awl a long time ago. That looks like what they might have made the blade of. A very  neat piece you have there.

Tim Crosby sent me a message offering to put a plug on the end of this to make it a useful tool again . He also made a nice piece to cover the sharp end when not in use. The work blends in perfectly with the old awl.  Thanks , Tim  It looks great !  Jim

Tin's artistry puts it right back into shape, doesn't it? Good work! Thank you for bringing it back in.

That looks really nice. I really like the concept--combo sewing kit/ awl. (May have to make one of those myself). Or perhaps someone in the HCH will make a couple and start a trend. --JB
