Tough hanging on to those little needle file handles. So I decided to make a couple needle file handles. Just loosen the set screw and you can switch to a different needle. Turned the brass insert on the metal lathe. The wood of course on the wood lathe. Easier on these old hands. Hardest part was filing out that little butterfly set screw.

Ended up making a third one this weekend. They are very handy. Still need to make the locking screw. Will finish that tonight. I get much more control with the handle resting in my palm.

Not thought about it. But let me make up a couple and see what kind of time I would have in them. Making the brass ferrules and lock screw is the most time consuming.

The set screw should be of "low profile" so as not to interfere with the work. That thumb screw is nice, and an Allen set screw model would be nice also. I purchased some swiss needle file handles that had a rotating lock collar that was convenient but a bit expensive. If you are going to make them to sell you should also make up some shorter and fatter ones for those who like larger diameter handles but not as long. My two cents worth ;D

I find that as the file can be rotated in the handle the thumb screw can be positioned out of the way very easily. Not having to use a wrench is a plus for me as I don't have to look for it. It does not have to be very tight as these are fine needle files. I have not had an issue with a file slipping in several years of use. The only new one is the walnut handle. The other two are at least 10 years old. Your milage may vary.

Neat idea! I’ve used some leftover maple “mug pegs” for small file and chisel handles before, but never really considered the locking screw idea. Gonna have to try that…

I find them really handy and then the files can be put back in a little wooden block for storage. I do leave a half round and a flat file in a handle most of the time as they are so handy.

I received my two yesterday. They are wonderful. they felt so good. I had to try them. My wife threatened to take one. I'm thinking about a display for them But then she'll know where they are! Keep up the good work!!
