Title: New England Style Horn

  This one is similar to the one I repaired, shown with it.
 It is 13" around the outside curve and 10 1/2" tip-to-tip. The butt is Pine with a staple for the strap, it is naturally shaped and about 2 1/4" in diameter, held by 4 wooden pegs.
I changed the tip a bit, made it thinner so it would fit better in the pan if used as a primer too and the paneled section is a little longer.

Thank you for sharing that horn. I have a few raw horns that have similar coloration, that I wasn't quite sure what to do with. Did the original makers orient the grain of the plug in any specific direction?

 I've never paid any attention to it, I wouldn't think it would make any difference. I have seen them with end grain showing where it looked like a branch was jammed in, pegged and whittled off.

Hi Tim,
That horn goes to the owner of the NE fowler I am about to build with my new 50" barrel.   He bought it to go with the gun.

I have an original New England horn with the year 1840 carved in the butt plug.  The grain goes across the horn side to side.  It probably all came down to whether the maker paid attention to how the horn was lined up when cutting the plug out of the wood.

Thank you for the replies about grain orientation. I am pretty sure it doesn't matter much either, was just curious if one way was dominant in the region.
