Title: Patching
Post by: varsity07840 on December 08, 2022, 12:27:05 AM
has anyone tried using double thickness .010 patching to get .020. I'm out of .020.

Once at a match. I thought I had more material in my box, but I forgot to put it in there. I ended up finishing the match with a strip of material from a friend, and I doubled it.  Seemed to work OK.

Here's a 50 yard "group" shot from my .69, using 2 .017" denim patches. I was using a grossly undersized ball of a mere .662".  Although the combination was just short of the
groove bottoms, it shot well and cleanly, as well. No wiping needed. Appears I threw 2 shots. with this ball, I found a single .034" patch worked about the same.

I suggest you give it a try and tell us if it works.

I've tried it a few times and it worked pretty good.  Not my usual practice as I have plenty of heavy stuff for single ply patching.

I have used double thickness of my flannel cleaning patches. It was not enuf but it did keep all the rest of my shots on paper.

When I bought the rifle I've been shooting lately, Track of the Wolf recommended a .010 patch and .375 ball for the load, so that was what I bought from them and took out to shoot with it the first time. That load just about falls down the barrel. After the first shot, I switched to using two of the .010 patches, and that gave very good accuracy at 25 yards. I've since ordered and been using thicker patches for that rifle, but I didn't have any issues with two thin ones.

Ordered some  bulk .020 pillow ticking From Dixon's. Nobody else seems to have pillow ticking in that thickness. I don't care for the tan cotton material or pre-cuts.
